It's fine if you know what you are getting into, and some people will be lucky and some unlucky, but personally I get frustrated that there seems to be a permanent and entirely false consensus in the motoring press that you can buy an older Porsche and keep it running for sensible money. The same mags usually take a bath whenever they try it, but continue to print stuff about "setting aside a grand a year for running costs" and so on, it's like a collective amnesia and no doubt it helps Porsche massively by keeping values and interest high.
CAR mag did it a few years back with a 911, I think it was a 59 plate, and the journo tasked with reporting on it spunked across it every month, managed some sneery comments about a friend who had opted for a Maserati Gran Sport (why would ANYONE do that when they could have a Porsche, etc ) and completely glossed over several relatively minor things that simply shouldnt've come up on a 6 or 7 year old car. There was definitely mention of some significant part in the exhaust being replaced due to rust and this was deemed acceptable, whereas everybody who runs a several year old cheap car knows that shouldn't be the case.
I'm sure Porsches are great, and if that's what you like then excellent, but there are some of us who simply 'don't get it' and would prefer not to be belittled for not opting for the chosen one!
Rant over, and breathe.......

I was lucky, I still find stuff missed or messed up (door seals) but frankly I consider myself lucky and anyone who saw the pictures knows what I mean. Sorry it came to this end but if you can find a positive, like a new opportunity or appreciate the potential cost of keeping the car all is not lost.

I was thinking about the MOT issues overnight and actually springs snapping is now very common, some cars appear predisposed to it (I've had to replace the left front on both the Stilos I owned, they all do that, Sir!) but the shit state of the roads combined with the relatively recent widespread use of speedbumps is clearly another factor. This has also cost me a lot of money in replacement drop links (annually on the 2nd Stilo).
Not sure about the exhaust thing though, it seems a huge of money for a short section of bent pipe.
Do Milltek still exist, their sport cats were a favoured option among the tuning brigade.

My boss' Boxster snapped a spring in spectacular fashion the other week. He called me over at work and asked if I could run round with him in the van to get the front wheel taken off to get a puncture repaired. When I removed the front wheel, I was faced with the true horror - the spring had snapped in 4 separate places and a particularly sharp section had gouged the tyre clean open. "Oh, so that's what the funny noise was when I was driving..."

Ninemeister are the guys in Warrington. We used to use them for our geometry setups, top bunch of lads. Those are the ones.I went to them many many years ago with my 968 ,they had some insane stuff. One of them had a 911 turbo (the whaletail variety) that had everything removed and replaced with lightweight panels and had the engine making 500 bhp or something stupid but the car weighed 750kg .

Interesting figures on the running costs over 12yrs. It’s quite eye-watering!
For comparison, I just did some rough calculations of how much it has cost me (depreciation, finance charges, fuel, insurance, tax, servicing) in the 9yrs since I got back from Russia over 5 BMWs, three of them new, and it comes out at £72k over 9 years, which extrapolated to 12yrs is a very similar amount to yours (a few £k less but not meaningfully so).
In my case the big saving (offsetting deprecation/finance charges) has been on servicing. By and large that has cost me almost nothing due to the joy of long service intervals and inclusive servicing packs.

Remember that the Cayman has only being doing half a job for Dan, which will have kept the costs down vs in being his only cat.
