I've just been asked what car I'd recommend for a colleague. They've got £12k to spend and the company motor they're giving up is a Merc E300 Hybrid, i.e. the 2.2 diesel, and its an estate. I presume they'll want something with similar capabilities.
For 4 days a week they commute from Edinburgh to Dundee so I'd say they're currently doing an easy 25k miles a year.
I know they currently sometimes use their wife's 2 year old Audi A3 TDI as well.
They have previous with a Volvo V70 as well and they're in their early 50s.
Any ideas?

Given the brief a Volvo XC70. I'm going XC as its Scotland and who know what the weather will throw up.

That’s as good a suggestion as any, otherwise an A6 Allroad if they like Audi?

For us to make a reasoned suggestion a photo of the wife would probably be helpful.

With lots of miles to cover and only £12K to spend I would be staying with relatively new, about 18mths manufacturer's warranty and not premium makes.
Perhaps an Insignia or Astra Estate or a Focus or Kia/Hyundai.
At that money for a decent German, you are already at 40,000 to 50,000 miles and/or 5 years old and for a motorway commuter I don't see the sense in having a 75K+ mileage car and no warranty after a year, piling on 2,000 miles a month. It probably needs to be a diesel as well!

I agree with John. One of Lindsay’s Team had a similar requirement (slightly higher budget), I recommended an i40 Tourer which she’d not even thought of and she’s been really happy with it. You’d get one less than 2 years old for £12k, so plenty of warranty left and cheap running costs.

A colleague of mine has a Kia Optima, which I presume is the same car underneath, and it’s a lot nicer than I thought it would be. Twelve grand easily gets a 2014 model with low mileage. For comparison that money only goes as far as a 2011 A6 with over 100k miles. There’s a fully loaded 15 plater up for £13k in Dunfermline but the AT app won’t let me copy the link.

Sticking with the non-premium as new as possible thoughts, if he's used to the size of a Merc E class, then a Mondeo estate diesel auto might fit the bill. But looking on Autotrader I think to get a low mileage one, he might have to spend a bit more.

A friend of ours who deals in auction-bought accident repair jobs reckons they're a bitch to work on and the parts are (relatively) pretty expensive. I'm not convinced myself, plus a friend of mine is a mechanic in a Hyundai dealers, so some cheap(er) parts would be sourced from him if needed as well as know-how on work needing done. I'm planning on speaking to him about exactly that next time we catch up. i40 is on my own list for Legacy replacement when the time eventually comes. Speaking of Kia Optimas, a member of my flying club has one (estate too, as it happens) which he really likes; gong to blag a shot in that when I can.

All good suggestions thanks. He said he might consider upping the budget by £5k. Apparently he likes Disco 4s but without looking I doubt they're within either budget.
Going by the conversation we had at 5 o'clock yesterday he also likes E39 M5s.......

I don't see either of his likes being 25K a year cars especially on his budget.

He has his hands full building a holiday home on one of the Scottish islands at the moment so although it would make sense - and free up a load of cash - it's probably a no-no.
Anyway, having asked if he was a badge snob and suggesting the Mondeo or i40 he identified the Hyundai Santa Fe. A quick look on autotrader shows £17k will get you a 2014/15 with under 40k miles. Job done.
