My current pet hate is the M6 between 16-19 (i think) where they are 'upgrading' to a smart motorway. 20 fucking miles at 50mph. They can't work on more than a mile a month, so why stick the whole fucking 20 miles at 50mph? It’s always something that annoyed me about the long stretches of M1 that had roadworks that seemed to go forever yet only had a small section being worked on at a time. If you look at google maps around 10 or 11pm and select the traffic layer, you’ll notice they have closed off massive chunks of it overnight to do most the work, because a lot of the changes can’t be made whilst the road is open, however it’s not ideal to close it at 9am on a Monday morning. It is apparently quicker and cheaper to do it with the entire section put under restrictions. Not sure why though.

I got offered a course - very pleased. I think it must be because it is a motorway speed course rather than the regular one. A snip at £85 too. Exellent result!

^ I suffered this for years when the M3 was "upgraded" to smart status. Many, many miles was coned off with narrow lanes and 50mph restrictions between the M25 junction and Farnborough Junction 4a. Most of the time you were lucky to spot one gang of workmen in the entire stretch, rare indeed to spot 2 or more gangs and on numerous occasions there was nobody working. When motorways form such an essential part of our nation's infrastructure, you'd have thought that the government would have insisted on 24/7 working to get the widening done ASAP, especially when there are no residential areas close to the works, so no risk of locals complaining about noise or pollution from the contractors (and their machinery)

It was the same up here when they were re-doing the M80, driving along for miles at 40mph at midnight on a Sunday with no other traffic around and no workies was particularly irritating

Plus they often changed the layout of the cones with NO warning, so it could be a very different road from morning-night and vice versa. Especially fun in the heavy snow!
