RIP Bill Maynard. Mostly remembered from Heartbeat, but my first memories of watching him are as The Gaffer.

Loved him in heartbeat He used to live in Leicestershire , and came over twice a week to the casino at the Ricoh to play poker. Me and a mate spotted him late one night in his mobility scooter and were chatting to him for ages . He was brilliant . RIP  |

I remember him initially from “Oh no, it’s Selwyn Froggett”. Great character actor that never seemed to be up his own arse with late-found fame.

Mrs R knew him, briefly, when he lived close to where she lived, a good few years ago. She still has a handwritten character reference from him, which he wrote for her when she applied for one of her early jobs.

I only knew him as Greengrass in Heartbeat from my childhood. My mum used to watch that most Sunday nights.
