Friend owns a 2006(56) Alfa Brera 2.4 JTDm. Stunning looking car in grey with black detailing.
He is keen to have some enhancements made particularly to the performance and was keen on the idea of starting off with a performance air-filter, whose manufacturer claims to increase bhp, in particular a K&N air filter
I know that these different types of air-filter with a different coating will allow the engine to breath better and therefore the ECU should allow the combustion to make a bigger spark (more air, bigger bang) and therefore theoretically give more power.
Has anyone got any experience of using a K&N filter and does it give extra bhp?
At nearly £50 a part compared to a fifth of that for an off the shelf boggo filter does the extra outlay give you that little bit extra ?
If it does, do you think me fitting one to the Mondeo when I have it serviced next month is a good idea?

I’ve got a K&N panel filter on the MX-5. No discernible difference has been noted.
Really, you are restricted by the factory air box and pipe work. Induction kits, properly fitted, do make a difference that would be noticed.

I've got a K&N filter in my Fiat Coupe and it made no discernible difference, however, it does have the advantage of being much longer lasting than the standard filters so is worthwhile that way.
Conversely the M5 owners forum recommend that you DON'T put K&Ns, etc, in because the oil coating on them eventually affects the mass flow air sensor.
More power in a turbo surely means getting it remapped? I know there are 2.4JTDms running around with 300BHP!

I can't believe K&N has successfully pedaled their filter technology for over 50 years. There can't be many of us mugs who haven't fell for it at some time or other.

I Put k&n filter on my escort xr3i ,but it was accompanied by a janspeed exhaust and a racing camshaft.Car was like a rocket afterwards but not pleasant as the cam was too lumpy.I have no idea if the air filter made any difference.

The beauty of K&N filters is in their longevity. They are designed to be removed and cleaned, so need to ever replace them.
Plus, they make a great BWARP noise. I swore by them during my fast Peugeot phase. And my fast Vauxhall stage. In fact, if it was fuel injected and a bit tasty, I had a K&N on it.

I think they made a difference, in about 1987. I call bullcrap on the supposed BHP increases of most remaps, exhausts, air filters, devices to align the chemical structure of fuel in the lines, etc etc
But if it makes a nice noise, go for it! On a turbo diesel that is probably not a factor...

It's the 2.4 so it'll have a lovely 5 cylinder noise. Hell, even the 5 pot diesels they had in VW Transporter vans 10-15 years ago sounded good

I'd just leave it as standard unless there is some recommended filter in Alfa circles. Volvo forums reckon there's no point in changing the standard filter on the T6. Your mate would be better off with a decent remap.
And, in all honesty, I'd leave the Mondeo filter as standard too.

Twice as a youngster when they were proper pancake replacement assemblies rather than just the replacement filters they are now - compared to a clean standard filter they made little difference other than to the sound - the advantage was that they didn't clog up and cause a performance drop off like the old paper filters did. The main reason I bough them was for looks though - just part of a engine bay that had a polished carb, alloy rocker covers, bright red block etc etc.
