I'm quite excited by this. Trying to find a car between me and Tara has proved almost impossible. She likes 'high' cars and Toyota's. I like fast cars and cars that are good to drive . Quite a difference. She knows what a Golf R is, and likes that, but I couldn't take the plunge as it would get nicked. 'It's a Golf R, just a bit taller' I said. Well it pretty much is right? I'd only consider an SUV as long as there was a bit of a rocket ship under the bonnet. Apart from a Macan and SQ5 (which is way out of our price range) there's nothing out there. Tara really likes the Ateca (a pal has one), and I'd heard a Cupra version was rumoured..... www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/296bhp-cupra-ateca-revealed-first-car-seat-performance-brandI realise it's not going to be a Focus RS in the bends, but 300hp and 4wd will be quite amusing. And the standard Ateca gets praised on how car like it is to drive. Am I mad?

Go for it. I've always thought that Cupra sounded a bit like a fossilised turd (copralite) so not mad keen on it as a brand name. Apart from that, it all seems good.
Women and cars is usually difficult...not least due to the scope for unpredictable inconsistency.

I don’t think you’re mad. I quite like that, looks better than the standard model and is sure to be decent to drive.

Go for it - seems to be the best compromise for both of you. Looks good too.
My only beef with the Cupra Ateca is its name. Why do manufacturers think that they need a new "brand", when it is not one in any way shape or form? Do they ever learn?Everybody knows what a Cupra is. It is the most powerful and sporting SEAT model, SEAT Ateca Cupra made complete sense. But no, it now has be its own brand.
Surely SEAT cannot have looked at Ford (Vignale) and Citroen (DS) and thought, wow that's so successful we must do that!

It’s not like VAG don’t have enough brands as it is, either!

I had to click the link just to remind myself what an Ateca was!!

I suspect that the thinking is people will be prepared to pay more for a Cupra Ateca compared to a SEAT Cupra Ateca. Sticking SEAT on the front and back of a vehicle limits how much you can charge for it in relation to other VAG product.

After my dealer experiences, I've been put off the brand for life, even though it doesn't exist yet, but my biggest issue with this car is that the Leon estate is just as roomy, better looking, has the same running gear, is probably faster and will probably be better to drive.

I agree, but we will be paying half each so need to compromise It’s definitely not as roomy . The headroom in the back of the Cupra ST was a struggle even for me . Ateca (non Cupra) I’ve sat in had much more room

It looks very good to be fair to it. I might have mentioned already that I keep looking at the Grand Cherokee SRT as a replacement for the 3 series but the eye watering MPG is putting me off but they look amazing value when compared to the German equivalents.

First drive in the new Evo, Andy.
Won’t spoil it too much,”but you should know that a faster, more powerful and much more fun to drive Golf R estate is both £350 cheaper and has 95 litres more luggage space”.
Sounds like SEAT have done a decent job with what they had to work with, but the Golf will be more than £350 cheaper after discount and had a height adjustable seat so Tara can sit high up! I’d compromise on the boot space and get the hatch, even more convinced now having run one for a few months.

I just read the Autocar review and even though they give it 4 stars it reads more like a 3 star one. They also state that the next iteration of the Cupra Leo ST will still have a SEAT badge. What the fuck?!
The comments section is hilarious, though.

I know, I know, but if your missus don’t like estates.. if it was up to me I would obviously have a golf r . Just saw it as a reasonable compromise (especially with a revo stage 1) besides, after a spirited drive yesterday now these PS4s are scrubbed in, it made me think why the hell would I sell mine. I might just do that - keep mine and she can just get that c-hr or whatever it’s called (the fugly Toyota suv)

Sounds like a plan, but a more basic spec Ateca (or similar) not a CH-R, had one as a hire car and it was awful.

I actually quite like the C-HR! +1. I applaud Toyota (or any manufacturer) for doing something different and challenging. I'm not sure I would buy one though.

A friend has one - it rolls a little more than I expected and the ride is a little brittle, but it's not that bad.

Different and challenging is just a polite way of saying "4 wheeled dog's dinner"
Words that spring to mind with the C-HR:
Mish-mash. Incoherent. Vegan. Communication breakdown.

Apparently there are 2 engine choices; the 1.2 petrol or the 1.8 hybrid - what did you have?

Apparently there are 2 engine choices; the 1.2 petrol or the 1.8 hybrid - what did you have? 1.2 petrol, the hybrid should help with the performance issues. I was expecting a small turbo engine to move it along quite nicely based on what I’d read about them, but it struggled on the motorway coming out of Belfast and it was very hesitant pulling away. Styling aside, which is clearly subjective, I can’t see the benefit over a similarly priced hatchback which will be better to drive and more spacious / practical.

Which is good, because if you're moving faster, no one can see you in it.

Just looked it up, the hybrid get from 0-60 in 11.0 seconds, the 1.2 manual in 10.9 seconds. So they’re equally slow.....

Hybrid only has an extra 6 BHP and is probably heavier with it.

Danger of taking things at the bald 0-60 stat, but never mind, eh? The battery's instant torque means it feels a lot quicker than that at step-off and lower speeds. Warm hatch quick, I'd have said.
I'm not entirely sold on the looks, but his is all black and it might say a lot that this suits it. Keep pulling his leg that he needs to buy some suitable eyewear:
