Right. Following on from my other thread and a subsequent discussion with Mrs Tim I thought I'd get some quotes for a 340i Touring. Choosing the Shadowline option (which adds a few things I would select anyway) bumps the basic price up to £45,815.
I got 5 quotes from Carwow, the best being £37,331 representing a saving of £8,484 or 18.5% (3 of the offers are for this exact price!). That includes a finance deposit from BMW of £3,500 and an APR of 1.9%.
I got a couple of quotes from Coast2Coast but had selected a variety of options - sunroof, electric seats, etc - which pushed the price up to ££49,120 The best quote was £40,238, a saving of £8,882 which is 18.1%
Interestingly going through the BMW site and getting a finance quote shows they'll put up a deposit contribution of £6,550.
Mrs Tim has questioned why we would need a 3.0 petrol instead of a 2.0 but now I've looked I know the 4 pot would leave me disappointed!
I'm now slightly scared because I feel like I've started something that's going to end expensively!

I should've added that BMW's GFV for a 4 year PCP on 10k miles p.a. is only £14,600.

I should've added that BMW's GFV for a 4 year PCP on 10k miles p.a. is only £14,600. That will be a combination of factors:
A new (as yet unlaunched) 3 series will be nearly 2 yrs old by then The move to hybrid/electric
EDIT: Drivethedeal look as though they will beat that deal by about £1K

I confess that if I had an E39 M5 to play with, I might think that I could cope with a manual 320i xDrive for the daily.
What's the difference price-wise after discounts and GFV and whatnot?

I could keep the 320d for now (which is the most likely scenario) but I feel that as a 'car guy' I'm almost obliged to try and have the most interesting commuter car possible, within various parameters such as estate, electric seats, etc.
Actually I'm using you, Racing, as my excuse for looking at the 340 over the 320i because your economy figures are barely any worse than those of my colleague's 4 pot xDrive
