I came to the conclusion quite some time ago that the estate version of any medium to large saloon car is always better looking than the saloon. I am yet to find an exception to this rule.
Think about it:
3 and 5 Series. C and E class. A4 and A6. Mondeo. Insignia. Superb. Octavia. XF. V60.
All better looking as estates. Are there any that aren't?
(Small estates don't count because theycan look weird)

Generally I agree but it isn’t always true. The last XF was far better looking as a saloon and the new E class works better as a saloon than the clumsy chrome stripped estate version.

Subaru Legacy (4th Gen, like mine and Boxer’s) looked shit as a saloon.
I don’t like the E Class anyway, but I think the XF looks miles better as an estate in all generations.

I tend to agree, all things being equal, the versatility of an estate trumps the saloon versions as well.

My only bugbear with the first gen XF estate is the ridiculous black strip on the D pillar that interrupts the window line and looks naff. In black with blacked out chrome, it's probably the best looking estate car out there.

As you know the old dear has that car, it’s very pretty but model for model the saloon is prettier still. It’s all subjective, of course, vive la difference as they say. I’d have the estate for the practicality over any saloon.

Current XF looks worse as an estate as did the first generation estate. Of the four cars I’d have to say the first hen saloon is the best looker. I’m not complete sold on the send gen Merc CLS shooting brake but perhaps that’s not technically an estate.
So overall Blarno you are pretty much right bit I reckon it’s 90% true.

Thats the exception to the rule....CLS Estate. Both XFs look better in estate form, despite the black pillar on the first version. The current model is a big step backwards at the rear though, the more I see the less I like it.

Golf estate looks badly proportioned against the hatch and the jury’s still out on the Panamera but on the whole your more right then wrong

I'd agree for Gen 3 and 4; Gen's 1 & 2 were good looking s saloons IMO. (Actually, I don't think there was an estate Gen 1. Never mind.)

There was a Gen 1 Legacy estate, but they're very rare indeed. In UK spec Turbo form at least.

The previous Megane also looked much better as an estate - sorry, sports tourer. I was more than happy with how mine looked.
I agree small estates often look odd but it’s mostly the ones based on superminis that suffer this rather than C segment cars.

In general I'd agree - current Insignia looks nicer as an Estate, but the just superseded one was better as a hatch - not so keen on Mercedes Estates and Jags to my eyes work better as saloons - 3 series is better as a two door than 4 door or estate. Never seen an Estate in the class below that looks better as an Estate than a hatch - only one I ever liked was the Escort Mk1 Estate - Golf in particular is horrible as an Estate. Alfa 159 is the best looking of any recent Estate.
I've seen photos of couple of Cortina Mk4 and Mk4 facelift converted to two door estates and they look great like that.

(Small estates don't count because theycan look weird) I generally prefer estates to saloons too, both from an aesthetic and practical perspective, but I think the rule is not completely universal. I think the 156 saloon was better looking than the Sportwagon version. Likewise the current Panamera, Citroen DS, Renault Laguna (first gen), most generations of the Honda Accord with the exception of the 1980s Aerodeck.

This is very much a matter of taste - for every person that feels as Blarno does, there seem to be as many who just do not like any estates! I like some but I think my liking the practicality of the shape gives me bias... I thought the 156 SW was the ultimate good looking estate but Racing has already opposed that view, very much personal tastes this one!
