My wife's 500 has started making an odd noise in reverse. It's extremely hard to describe but somewhere between a moan and a whirr (think muffled version of a creaking door). It's quite loud and then this morning I noticed it make the same noise momentarily in second gear when the engine braking kicked in. Yesterday a dash warning light came on for about 5 minutes but then went out again and hasn't re-illuminated. It was a yellow triangle which is generic could be one of any of number of things, including a duff bulb (not so far as we can tell), issues with the fuel pump or a fault with the oil pressure sensor.
Any thoughts on what this noise might be?

Have you checked the oil level recently?
EDIT: My initial thought was perhaps the clutch or the release bearing since a lot of the time in reverse the clutch is still partly engaged.

No but the oil ought to be fine - it was only serviced by the main dealer three months and less than 1k miles since ago (car only has 17k miles on the clock). An internet trawl did suggest clutch release bearing as a possibility but wasn't sure given it makes the noise under engine braking as well?

Does it only make the noise when drive is engaged? IE, if the clutch is dipped does it stop?
My suggestion would be the release bearing, but 17k is awfully low for one to be on the way out, unless it has had some hard city driving and clutch slipping. A release bearing will make a noise any time drive is engaged and force is acting upon it, so it will continue to make noise even under engine braking.

That was the sound of a new Abarth being warmed up as you trade in.....

Have you tried standing beside it while she reverses to see if you can pinpoint the noise?

Have you got a fox trapped underneath somewhere?
Wishful thinking I know.

It would be odd because the car is only 4 years old, neither my wife nor I rides the clutch and it's been serviced punctually every year irrespective of mileage by the main dealer.
But then again...it's a Fiat.
