Another non breakdown...the hybrid electronic s are way too interfering!
Fuel light came on way home, assumed range c40 miles (range blanks out when light comes on). Charge up battery to give an extra 15miles range and drive into Derby 8 miles away the next day and leave at station car park with 4miles electric left...
The following day I get back to Derby and car starts in EMode only, with limited power and loads of warnings and no petrol. Petrol station is under 2 miles and remaining electric used up within that....cue loads of lights on dashboard and coasting to within 50yds of petrol station and it dies. Engine refused to start automatically or come off battery mode.
There was still 7% battery left and I coaxed the engine into life by turning it all off and on again and being brutal with accelerator....but what a palava when there is still fuel in the tank. Bloody electronics!

Fuel light came on way home, assumed range c40 miles (range blanks out when light comes on). That's ridiculous! On some of the cars I have driven, when the "refuel now" light comes on, any variable-content electronic display automatically changes to "miles left" as a brutal reminder of the urgent need to refuel.

The Renault we had was the same, the range disappeared just when you needed it the most.
Not sure you can put all the blame on the electronics! If the garage was only 2 miles from the train station, why not fill up in the morning? Hindsight is a wonderful thing....!

I got the Golf down to just 10 miles the other week but it had about 2 litres left so probably would have managed 20-25.

You clearly haven't seen how finely tuned the operation to get the 0722 to London is in a morning!!! I fully accept I shouldn't let it get that low and was chancing it a bit but my irritation is there was both Petrol and electric in the car and the car wasn't allowing me to access them - when I filled up I got 43l in a 45l tank The range thing is barmy - just when you need to know how much you have left it goes - The Captur had a range of 75miles and then fuel light on/0 miles - not helpful! The Evoque used to count all the way down - debatable if you trust LR fuel calculation ability however, I never took it below 15 miles!!

Running low on fuel is something I hate. I always fill up when I reach quarter full. My wife on the other hand has an amazing ability to get the low fuel beep to sound as soon as she is taking me anywhere - it drives me mad on two fronts - why let it get so low and why do I always have to pay for it?

You clearly haven't seen how finely tuned the operation to get the 0722 to London is in a morning!!! This is one of the reasons I ride a motorcycle to work despite having a 7 minute walk to a TfL zone 4 station and the option of a bus and the tube. My bike journey to the city (only one day a week from next week thank god!) is 45-50 minutes in traffic. It doesn't matter if I leave at 0825, 0840 or 0850 (although if I leave at 0850 I can manage 40 minutes). If I leave the house at 0745 I'm on the 0754 train, I can be on the platform on the Drain in Waterloo by 0830 and having been to Bank and walked to Little Britain be in the office by 0845. If I leave the house at 0748 I won't be in the office by 0848..... As to the Merc's behaviour: long live gas guzzlers. I'm never short of petrol as I'm always filling the fucker up!

I’ve driven mine on zero, or dashed lines in a Volvo for quit a few miles. I hate filling up.

That sounds a ridiculous state of affairs.
I’ve driven the Legacy and the Volvo with no range showing for a good distance. There was still quite a lot in the tanks when filled. I’ve had the Land Rover off the bottom of the gauge and there was still a couple of litres in so probably about 10 miles range on the flat. Range for that is about 250 miles.
Driving down to Prescott a few years ago in the TVR, I got bored on the M5 and caned the last half hour or so to Cheltenham. Coming off the motorway and on to the dual carriageway past GCHQ the car started misfiring like mad unless I was very gentle with the throttle. When I eventually found a petrol station, there was only a couple of litres left. I tend to fill that up when the gauge gets to a quarter as it is easy to starve it of fuel when the tank gets low.
There is a guy in the village with a Leaf. It ran out of electricity about 200 meters from the village. It gave him no warning (it’s supposed to) but just ground to a halt. It did have its reserve electricity left, but it wasn’t enough to get up the slight rise into the village and it needed a push to help it along.

Clearly bryan you need to revert to the 1970's mindset and always carry a 5 litre can of petrol in the boot. Kind of ironic that....

The thought crossed my mind! It's the frustration of having fuel but the car deciding you can't access it!

The thought crossed my mind! It's the frustration of having fuel but the car deciding you can't access it! Perhaps its some kind of built-in self-protection feature to stop you from dragging through the sludge at the bottom of the tank?
