So yesterday I was out with the sons and one daughter and we had some time to spare. So having remembered that there was an M3 I liked in my AT garage we went to have a look. www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201711091099568?atmobcid=soc3Well I've never sat in an E92 M3 before. I have sat in an E90 and looked over a 92 and I am now regretting having done so. They’re quite fabulous. This one has extended leather, EDC and engine stop-start. Basically all the things except the correct wheels and lower ride of a Comp pack one. So all nice inside and I reckon extended leather is a must to make it feel remotely “special”. But one this stood out much more. These things are HUGELY practical. Number 2 son is almost taller than me now and he can sit behind me as driver with no problems. The boot is huge and getting comfy in the seat was a cinch. I spoke to a salesman and we agreed the E92 is more ‘M’ than the current one, mainly down to the engine, and I note values are still pretty solid for facelift ones some 20 months since I didn’t buy that Java Green one. Hmm. Very nice. But needs the other wheels.

Where does the extended leather cover because I'm seeing a lot of plastic?
Not only does it need the other wheels, it needs a different colour (anything other than the one it has) interior!

That looks perfect to me, including the interior colour.

The centre console, the bit under the dash dividing section (including the glovebox), extra on the door cards are the extended leather. I must say I'm probably with Tim on the interior colour as it makes this car too close to the Gorilla so I've got this one in my AT garage as well: www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201712132029579?Now that one IS a comp pack and in a different special order blue; costs less and has the much nicer high gloss piano black sections on the dashboard. No DAB or HK though and not from a BMW franchised dealer. According to my phone there are 130days until my 50th......

That link isn't working right... Either that or the car's already been sold

They are spectacular. I’ve documented my love of them elsewhere and now I’m going to go on Autotrader and check prices. You complete bastard.

I have to say that I test-drove an Approved Used manual E92 M3 a few years ago and wasn't blown away by it. I've heard it said that the DCT suits the car better, but with the manual version I tried, I walked away thinking "nice but no cigar". I remember thinking that compared to the six-cylinder cars, it felt curiously heavy at low speeds and only really came alive at licence-risking speeds.
What that first car above lacks, apart from the Competition Pack, is a different dash trim. Any other dash trim. That standard greyish plastic is horribly cheap-looking and there's lots of it. Many cars had the carbon-effect leather dash and that is heaps nicer.

Exactly.
I went to that dealership a couple of times years ago to see cars I was interested in. My recollection is that they were all superficially very shiny and desirable from photographs but didn't particularly stand close inspection in the metal, with the overall impression was of cars (often high spec or in rare colour schemes) that had not been particularly well cared for by previous owners but had just been polished up for sale, with the betting being that the high spec/desirable colours would cause punters to get excited and overlook the details. Fairly or otherwise, it has prejudiced my view of any car I've seen advertised by them ever since.
The squiffy panel finish on the front of that M3 reminded me of that.

I can vouch for the versatility of the E92 coupe and the lowered rear seats can take people much taller than you would otherwise expect - getting out is a bit trickier!
The boot could take my golf clubs and trolley easily or the luggage for a week away.
Great cars but as Racing said the M3 version only really comes alive when it gets extended. A friend who has had his M3 since 2007 still has it, despite easily being able to afford to change it - if it isn't a daily driver I think it's a keeper.
Just need to find the right one now!

The latest issue of BMW Car mag has a comparison of the E46 and E9X M3s. I think they prefer the older car and it appears the newer one is only fractions of a second quicker on acceleration to 3 figure speeds.

The E46 engine is very close on torque and the steering is by all accounts somewhat sharper.

I think they referred to the later car as being more mature!
