A friend of mine used to collect cars. Well, to be more accurate he used to collect cars that he then dismatled / rebuilt with the intention of using them for rallying. Some he even did rally. His main focus has always been Pug 205's. But in addition, he's had three Rover SD1 Vitesses for several years and I always joked with him that if he ever rebuilt one and wanted to sell it to give me a call. Well good grief, he came round on Christmas Eve to say that a 1986 Red SD1 Vitesse Twin Plenum was nearly ready and was I interested - the price would be very reasonable? I was. So we arranged to go and see the car yesterday. Some friends of ours staying for new year came along too - the guy is an engineer, has an XFR and Rover P5B and a 1990 7 series BMW, so a useful person to have along.
Well, have I been lucky or made a huge mistake? For I walked away. "Nearly ready" clearly means different things to different people. My friend's version is "well the list of things needed for the MOT is only about 100 items long, once I get most of the dashboard and trim back in and assuming the engine runs after three years of sitting there". If somebody had too much time on their hands and could finish the job, it may well be an appreciating classic. But as it stands, it was not for me. Shame, as I've always liked SD1 Vitesses.

Stick it in the barn until you have time.
Out of interest, how much was be asking for it?

Could be an ideal project for Blarno.

I remember Autocar getting a Vitesse to run as a long termer a fair few years back - even then it was a classic car. Sadly they seemed to lose enthusiasm for the project after a couple of reports

Could be an ideal project for Blarno. Are you trying to get me killed?! Mrs B would hit the roof if I got another project car! Sadly, if we move, I lose the double garage so any future projects will have to be small or non-existent.

I was hoping (expecting, based on his comments...) something that would get an MOT and be useable that I could then fettle and tidy up. If I stuck that in the barn it would just sit there for another [insert long period here] time doing nothing. I wanted something that I could use. Price wise they seem to be a huge range of prices - concours ones go for about £15k. Running but needing tidying seem to be about £5-6k. My friend mentioned about £5k for his, which I think is being hugely optimistic! I wouldn't pay that for sure.

Shame, would have been a fun car and an interesting one to turn up to events in without costing a load of money.

I spotted a Sierra XR4x4 slowly rotting out the back of my favourite Indian restaurant over Crimbo. I'm tempted to go back and ask about its provenance - even if it isn't a runner, it's worth money as a spares or repairs.

But you're a retired man with time on his hands, aren't you? ;-) Now I'm retired, I don't know how I found the time to work - with the farm, house, garden, horses, cars and life generally - I seem even busier than ever. But in a good way!
