The notification came through on Saturday. Last year was £757 for all the cars on a multicar policy. Anyone want to hazard a guess what Admiral are quoting for a 'no hassle' renewal?

Given the 25% increase in my premium, I would say £1,150 to include a good dose of buggeration factor and a special increase for being a loyal customer.

I bet at least £1,500. I won’t touch Admiral or any of their companies for precisely that reason. They are well known for it.

Hmmm interesting.
The actual renewal premium is £693.28, a fall of over 8%!

I wondered if they'd done something weird but I printed all the proposals off so I could match the info when I was getting quotes from other providers and all cars were present and correct.
Best alternative I managed was £900 with Direct Line and that had a higher excess than Admiral.

Yes but isn’t Fife considered very low risk and thus pretty cheap for insurance? I recall getting a nasty shock when I moved from St Andrews to Guildford years ago.

I'm not sure, I suppose it depends on what level of postcode analysis the companies use - some bits of Fife are quite unsavoury, especially compared with St Andrews.
I was certainly expecting the renewal to start off with some increase though, and then to negotiate it down to the previous level.

I received my renewal through on Saturday, difficult to compare to last year as I swapped cars part way though, but it’s increased.....
£1374!
I did a new application and it came to £1389, which has been the case without Direct Line for the last 3 years. I did the usual searches and I can get it down to around £1,100, which is something I suppose. Did some research and everyone I checked around that price point had poor reviews, but as I worked up the list that didn’t really change. Not sure what to do, but have 3 weeks to decide.

^ If you can afford it, renew.
If you can't, time to change car again......
Have you tried a local broker?

^ Insurance premiums appear to have been creeping upwards during the past 2 years.... not helped by Insurance Premium Tax rises

Is it so high because of mileage? I ask as mine is nowhere near that (accepting differences in car values, although also including work on the engine), but I only do 5-6k p.a.

I’ve not adjusted the mileage to check, but I assume so as I’ve set it to 30,000 a year. I’m curious now....will adjust it this evening to see what the impact is. The 535d was £797 last year and the Golf cost £538 on 15,000 miles a year.

It's that 3 grand paint job! Errrrr, 7 grand! Which they don’t know about as it’s a ‘standard’ factory fitted option.

The paint is supposed to be 40 times the cost of the normal paint, the car is painted standard silver first and then it’s taken off the production line and hand finished/painted. There will be plenty of profit it it of course, but not that much. if you’ve got a spare few minutes..... Link to video

That’s why the Golf gets used when we go shopping, we even used it when we had to leave a car for a few days at the airport.

The paint will be very expensive - I was surprised to see how much anything with a flake in it costs, even for a small quantity.
Re-the insurance cost I suppose your best option is to phone them up and ask for a lower price, they can usually do something for you, especially if you've got a cheaper quote but give them the 'I'd rather stay with you' line.

Yes, will go through to their renewal line and talk about cancellation to see what they can do first.

Despite doing that, the Golf picked up a dent in the near side rear door when it was only two weeks old. The paint didn’t chip thankfully and it’s not hugely noticeable, but I know it’s there and you can see it fairly clearly when the light catches the side as it’s on the crease in the metal.
