We’re heading back to Ireland this week and I’ve rented a VW Jetta here in California. Interesting as I’ve never had a European car as a rental here before in more than 20 rentals. It’s basic with cloth seats, 6 speed auto gearbox, hard plastics everywhere including above the armrest on the doors... Sound system is good and handles pretty well. Engine is turbo charged, sounds like a diesel but revs to over 6000 and is very keen to get into top gear. I’m about to drive it over 200 miles today so will have a better idea what it’s like then..
Funny thing is, it feels so good to be in a German car again. There’s just something about them that makes them stand out from the ordinary car.

You must be the first person to conclude a Jetta is out of the ordinary!

Are they Mexican made? Didn’t know that.
Post long drive conclusions- gearbox is indecisive, and changes too much. Car was very economical by American standards, doing about 40mpg (US gallon) and was very nippy in traffic.
Wouldn’t charge my iPhone and play a non apple app at the same time over Bluetooth.
Overall, not bad for a basic model. They are selling them for around $18,000 so a better option than many, but the fact that they are available as a rental car is probably more to do with the recent VW controversy than anything else.
