The issue of foreign vehicles, specifically HGVs, has long been discussed in Germany. Most foreign lorries given the choice of about 10c per km on the French Autoroutes or 0c on the Autobahn choose the latter. Charging foreign registered vehicles via a stamp seems simple enough: e-tolling via an app is the current EU preference with only France persisting with its hugely costly system of Peages.

I assume the Peage staff are unionised with the RMT?

Both the Americans and Australians are moving to number plate recognition on their toll roads / bridges. It made a decent difference to journey times in our last visit to the US.

Umm...Italy has peages as well and they cost more per km in my experience than the French ones. It usually costs more in tolls than it does in petrol to drive any given distance on an Italian motorway. And which point you kind of understand why they all buy diesels.

Ah. I've only driven in the countryside in Italy, not on an Autostrada. Hmmm France and Italy persisting with a manned Peage system when the rest of Europe has moved to automation..... who'd have thought, eh?

Worse, at least in France as a foreign driver, you can get hold of the Telepeage auto-toll device. These exist in Italy but, like everything there, you would need a codice fiscale to get one...meaning you basically need to live in Italy. Meaning tourists must use cash/card.
