I think I'd spoil my ballot paper.

Stelvio for me or maybe the Stinger.
Can't stand the Volvo so it will probably win!

Having seen the Stelvio at the NEC, I would vote for that.

None of them appears to bring anything new to the marketplace..... however if the Ibiza can persuade Autocar that it's better than the Fiesat, maybe it should win. At least it is generally "affordable" unlike the A8 and 5-series

Is the Ibiza technically a new car? I thought it was just a slightly shorter Leon.
I agree I'd like the Stelvio to get it and Italian cars have had a habit of winning in the past. Wouldn't be at all upset by the new 5 winning though.

Soft roaders and saloons that incrementally improve the show (if at all)?
And we wonder why most people aren't interested in cars or driving...

I'd be interested in these ( and the Alfa Giulia ) second-hand if you could get a petrol manual box

The Volvo is the best of the bunch for me but, would I buy one? No.

I've driven a Stelvio, in 280bhp 2.0 petrol guise. It's quite nice but I'm not clear that it's CoTY material.
I would think the A8 for the tech.

The A8 is surely too expensive though?
Not really sure what would get my vote but certainly not the SEAT 'slightly adjusted VW Polo' Ibiza.
Possibly the Stelvio - if its actually any good - because at least its a venture into a new segment for its manufacturer (possibly the same for the Stinger?) rather than simply a new version of something that's gone before.

The Stinger would be a deserving winner, in my opinion. I like the look of the XC40 and wouldn't be surprised if that actually did win.

The COTY doesn’t follow any motor enthusiast logic, though. It’s far more to do with where it’s from than what it’s capable of.

So following the Eurovision logic, the car that most appeals to the twatfeatures and facefuck generation wins and driving ability is an irrelevant sidebar? I thought it was supposed to be won by the vehicle that most appe4aled to the driving part of the current demographic. I amso dissapointed by the current generation, no interest in driving pleasure, fanbloody boost and gawd only knows what next. I suppose there had to be a way to reduce the appeal of real driving to the next generation. Perhaps it is good thing my driving time is limited. Who knows.

A friend recently bought his daughter her first car. To put this in context, he has raced cars for as long as I have known him and the family regularly take their motor home to events towing the race car where they will all spend the weekend - this girl has been bathed in engine oil since she was born.
Her only criteria for a car was that it had to look cool! She got a Fiat 500 (as you might expect) but all she cared about was how it looked, the colour inside and out and whether it had Bluetooth. The majority of the young of today have a whole different view of cars than most of us - it is a fashion statement, it should have some eco credentials and it should be connected. After that, it really doesn't matter a great deal.

I don't think the motor enthusiast element has been involved for a lot of years (Talbot Horizon anyone?) and actually the facebook generation requirement should surely be a non-issue assuming fossils like Cropley, etc are still judging?

Autocar's representative is now Matt Prior. It appears that they look for the one that offers the best compromise, i.e. competent in everything, excelling in nothing. www.caroftheyear.org/our-spirit.phpP.S. I didn't even realise the Peugeot 3008 is the reigning COTY. Shows how much I pay attention to it now.

Perhaps not novelty, but it's a well-executed first attempt at a medium sized sports saloon/coupe with RWD and an interesting engine in the GT model, taking on the usual suspects from Germany, Italy and the UK. I quite like the aesthetics of it but take your point. I suspect, however, that Kia won't sell many over here owing to consumers' brand snobbery and I would probably include myself in the camp of the snobs!
