If it's not broken!
It looks more like an update to me than a whole new car but that's no bad thing. I am a bit worried though that it is growing from the current car's near 5m long!

I’m disappointed, I was expecting it to go into my shortlist. It’s too ‘droopy’, more like the original (which I never liked) than the outgoing model, which would have been a strong contender with a better interior.

It looks a little downhearted, a bit upset. Poor thing. Hope it's OK.

Interestingly that manages to be both meh and ugh at the same time. No mean feat.

They took it out of the mould a bit early.

Other than the headlights which look a bit weird, I quite like that actually.

It resembles something from several years ago but I cannot remember the name.

I like it too, but then I have always been a fan of the CLS, especially in shooting break form. A straight six would be very acceptable indeed.

It is rather understated and the better for that but it does not exactly have that 'something indefinable' to say it is special.

I like that, it's more like the original CLS (which is a fantastic looking car), the second gen was ruined by the weird rear arch haunches, this is back to the original with a more fluid design.

The red one in the Autocar pictures looks nice, I think it’s the nicest CLS yet. It does remind me a bit of a new Mustang that’s lost the hard edges.

The red one doesn’t look so droopy for some reason, be interesting to see what it really looks like.

The red one appears to have a less aggressive front bumper design so looses a fair amount of the visual bulk of other car. The grill treatment appears more successful, too.

Really like that, suitably handsome, brutish, expensive looking, got some presence but I can't stop looking at those rear lights and thinking they spoil the look. They are too angular, too sharp and pointy and don't go with the swooping curves. Much prefer to more vertical lights of the Mk2 CLS that reminded me of the S-Class. Put S-Class rear lights on the that and then it's a real stunner but to me they make the rear look narrow against the attractive wide stance of the front and I continue to be impressed with the panamericana grille, works a treat that does

Really nice looking car that, one of our young engineers has a current gen CLS (although he's just got married and his missus has just commandeered it so he's bought an M5) and I was never quite sure I liked it that much, but this one, while quite similar, just addresses those areas of concern I had. The first Mercedes in a while I'd be interested in buying.

The car in the top photo looks like the same colour that I saw an older CLS in, when I was in Copenhagen at the start of the month. Disgusting matt grey !

Get it in Black or a nice dark blue metallic with silver wheels and I reckon it will look very smart.

To me it looks like a facelift of the current one but with VW Passat rear lights grafted on.
Is it my imagination or has the Mk2 CLS been a lot less popular than the original?

From what I see on the roads, I would say it's not your imagination which given the elegance of the first one and the ugliness of the second one is not surprising. Glad to see the new one has moved back to the less fussy design of the first one - still not as good looking as the original though.

I’m surprised by how many like the original. I’ve always found way too challenging.

I think it looks incredibly dated now but I remember thinking at the time it was challenging but at least something new.
Now we can't move for things described as coupes.

I could never get on with the front. I seem to recal it was designed to have Jaguar like styling which was presumably quite coupy at the time.
