I learnt to drive in Peugeot 205 and many of my contemporaries learnt and passed their test in similar sized cars. I'm still surprised that so many driving instructors use larger cars like a Focus. Anyway, I now see that the test has changed to include components such as having to adjust heater controls on the move: www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-uk-driving-test-starts-4-decemberI think this is a good idea but I do wonder how much it'll affect the choice in driving instructor car - I wouldn't be wanting to play around with a touch screen menu to access the heater control on the move.

Just use something bog standard where all the controls are analogue.
I passed my test in a Beetle which was mine and bought before I sat my test - they don't come much more analogue than that!

My driving instructors had everything from a Nissan Micra, 205 XLD, Polo, Metro and eventually passed my test in a Corsa. I'm amazed that assortment didn't put me off for life.

Land Rover 110. Not much competition for being basic.

I hope the sat-nav element includes something on where to position it. I observed a car along side me in traffic recently that had a sat nav, mobile phone and dashcam attached to the screen - the satnan and phone vying for position above the wheel.

Metro for me, although I passed in a Fiesta Mk 2 as there was some issue with the Metro, related to it being shite, I think.
Autonomous drive Volvo or Tesla would be my choice currently if I were sitting the test.

MG Metro for mist of the lessons and the test, with a brief stint in a Metro GT-A, no less, whikst the MG was in for accident repairs.

I learned to drive in a Fiesta Mk 1 and an Escort of same vintage (and both were red, IIRC standard BSM colour at that time), passed the test in the Escort

A brand new 'S' reg Allegro - my instructor bought a new one every year and the R reg I started learning in was replaced shortly before my test.

One of my other test vehicles was brilliant for parking, not much visibility but anything in the way got moved, quick. Any colour you like as long as it's green.

I had some lessons with my Dad in his A-reg Cavalier 1.6L (A387 FJU if i'm not mistaken) before some lessons with British School of Motoring (BSM) in a magnolia coloured Metro Van den Plas with italic VDP scroll on the side.

My parents deliberately sought out a driving instructor with a bigger car for me to learn on because my mother had a Volvo 940 Estate and my father had a Range Rover LSE, and therefore they firmly thought it would be counterproductive to have me learn to drive something tiddly since they had no intention of getting me my own car.
This meant I learned to drive in a K-reg Proton saloon - one of those ones which was based on a boxy old 1980s Lancer.

Did those cars influence your own choice of "learner-mobile" in the Punto Abarth? (I think that's what you had, wasn't it?) Either, they both tended to 'compress' problems like parking spaces.

Nova 1.2 Merit. Didn’t even have a rear wiper.

Nova 1.2 Merit. Didn’t even have a rear wiper. Ha! My grandmother had a white G-reg Nova 1.4L 5dr that got passed down for us kids to use when granny upgraded to a Corsa not long after I learnt to drive. It did have a rear wiper, plus smart wheel-trims, a radio and a pin-stripe, but that was your lot. No PAS, windy windows, a gearlever that could have doubled as a wand...
It was quite spritely with the 1.4 as I recall.

1986 Nissan Micra 1.0L If the instructor was feeling nasty he would make us (most of the people at school used the same guy) do the hill start on the steepest one in town - the Micra couldn't take 2nd gear until the hill started to flatten out!
