Dear evo:
I was interested by the critical nature of Meaden’s piece on Lamborghini and the Urus in evo 244. But I sense a discrepancy between the critical tone it takes ‘a slave to targets and made to conform’ and how Porsche is viewed. I know that the Urus isn’t an evo car, but then neither is the Cayenne. Yet the latter is derided in one breath, but widely acknowledged as giving Porsche the clout to develop the sort of driver-focussed cars that evo loves. This is viewed as a pragmatic trade-off, whereas Lamborghini doing something similar is heresy. I suspect that there is a small degree of national stereotyping going in in accepting these views, and the Teutonic takeover at Lamborghini is viewed as somehow repressive and hostile. I doubt that’s how the people at Lamborghini feel!

I’m sure it makes sense to use the Audi V8 but it’s slightly disappointing from a dreamers perspective that it doesn’t have a proper Lambo engine in it.

You can't compare Porsche and Lambo. Porsche is a win at all costs manufacturer that took pride in its balance sheet as much as its new GT3. Lamborghini was supposed to be non conformist a car owned by the over tanned boy done goods who now have reside in the Riviera living on a tonic of escorts and caviar. I get what Meadens saying but the fact is their SUV should have been some sort of LM002 the size of a house and power to match. The Urus is just too vanilla, its disappointing. If Lambo have to conform than who's left to be the nutters.

Erm, aren't you in fact comparing them in the above post?
And whilst I dislike the idea, I think it's too early to be dissing the car completely based upon a few pictures.

This is a motoring forum, if we don't diss a car upon a few pictures what the fuck are we here for?

Wow. That's just terrible. It looks like a 5 year old kid designed it. All that stupid vents and slashes. I disagree. Whilst I don't really like the car or the very concept of a Lamborghini SUV, I do rather admire the completely bonkers design that has been produced and the details that are in there. The designers probably had a field day working on that. As an object I find it rather vulgar but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the work that has gone into it. It certainly makes a statement, if a rather over the top statement at that.

Lamborghini have been conforming since Audi took over, simple as that.

Lamborghini have been conforming since Audi took over, simple as that. Yes and thank God for that - they were shite before zee Germans took over. Always looked great on the posters on your wall but crap in real life. They've become a real car company now, not a schoolboy's wet dream.

I don't know, in the Ferruccio days they were pretty marvellous. Miura, 350 GT, Islero, ok that's about it but how amazing was the Countach before they stuck all the plastic crap over it. A basic LP400 is high up in the fantasy garage.

Always looked great on the posters on your wall but crap in real life. They've become a real car company now, not a schoolboy's wet dream. I must admit that I don't understand this view either. I can see why people might conclude that the basic Huracan is a bit safe in an Audi-esque way in that it lacks front-end so will not murder the rich orthodontist or cosmetic surgeon with more cash than talent, but Audi took over ages ago.
Lamborghini already had 4wd in its DNA, has been allowed to maintain large, charismatic n/a engines (indeed had them syphoned over to the R8) and even been allowed the sort of tech idiosyncrasy that Audi wouldn't have had to throw away because it would never have wasted money on it, such as the Aventador's ISR gearbox. Lamborghinis still look like nothing else (and still look like Lamborghinis should, to my eyes), still have scissor doors for the nuttiest model etc etc.
I think Audi has been more restrained than would have been expected from the get-go, and having cars that have functioning switchgear and electronics as well as something approaching first world quality control is to be celebrated, I think. I'd love a Performante.

I may be in the minority here, but - for what it is - I like it! Especially from the rear and rear 3/4, it looks like a Lambo. I like the flight-desk styled interior too.

That’s incorrect. Lamborghini had largely completed the development work on the Canto which was their Diablo replacement. Audi didn’t like the way it looked and canned the styling ordering a redesign to tone it down. Whether you like the Canto or not it’s clear to me looking at it that it is far more true to what a wet dream supercar in the Lamborghini mould would be.

Thread resurrection; one of my neighbours was on Dragon's Den with his range of high protein, low sugar bars and on the back of the success has got a Urus. I can't remember seeing one before but his is completely black, the only colour on it is the yellow of the brake callipers. It looks bloody sinister as it pootles about, like some sort of Batmobile.

There are few things I'd feel uncomfortable to drive but a URUS and G63 are probably right up there.

I've only ever seen one up close. It was a lovely shade of blue, but the massive black 20-something inch wheels rather spoiled it for me. Can you even get one with silver wheels?

Those are 22" wheels, you can get the comfort look (still 21") as well plus they are available with clear glass.

I quite liek the front but it just looks very sorry for itself at the rear, like a Bentayga that an Elephants parked its backside on.

In this part of London they are not that rare - there is one that lives on the road a couple of streets away, and there was another one in the car park of my gym last night.
Personally I think they are hideous. I'd be quite partial to the idea of a Huracan or Gallardo over an equivalent Ferrari. But the Urus is not my cup of tea.

Loathsome.
As long as the Range Rover remains in production I see absolutely no need to look elsewhere for un upmarket SUV.

I see a couple regularly. One is yellow the other black. The Audi version is a lot more pleasant which is saying something.
