Just booked a car for a few days I'll be in Dublin in Feb. I won't have to drive much so went for the cheapest - a VW Up. After making the booking I got offered the opportunity to upgrade for 10 euros a day (almost what I'm paying anyway)... to a Skoda Citigo!! - that's a lot of money to have a different grille!
It was only an extra 4 Euros a day when booking to have a Focus!
And if I want to add a second driver, it would actually be cheaper to hire a second car!
For the life of me, I can't get my head round car hire - how to they do it so cheaply in the first place? (cheaper than hiring a cement mixer!) and how do they work out the cost of the 'extras'?

I wish I knew, a black art indeed.

Yup, it is a black art but apparently, car hire in Ireland has always been cheap

Check out what they are charging for insurance. Dublin Airport is well known for the chronic prices they charge for insurance. It’s an absolute rip off. I was there last year in September and got a deal of about €15 a day on a Polo or similar (similar is a Corsa apparently...) but the insurance was €36 a day. I had booked the car for 2 weeks and returned it the following day. We ended up borrowing my sisters Kuga and paying €90 to go on the insurance instead.
Being from there, I hate that they fleece people on insurance. I really hope you get a good price and have a great tune while you’re there!

I got stung for £150 last month when I used a hire car in Belfast and Dublin. The fee was for dropping it off in another country. This wasn't mentioned when I picked it up in Belfast nor when I dropped it off, it just got billed to the company and first I knew was when our finance manager gave me an ear bashing!

They make money on upselling. Extra insurance etc. Which might be worth considering as they also make money by fucking you over on minor damage you didn't see that they charge you for but will most probably not repair.

Paying £50 for a years excess insurance is the answer to rip off charges.

Insurance was included and I take photos of the car when picking it up and dropping it off so they can't sting me for damage (plus at Dublin airport, you just leave the car in the car park a good distance from the depot with no one to check it, so worth taking a photo incase damage is done by someone parking alongside) - I got stung by Hertz at Dublin last year by adding a second driver - they said 'no problem' to add a second driver, swiped my card 'in case of damage' and charged for the second driver! - I got the card company to refund it.

Paying £50 for a years excess insurance is the answer to rip off charges. And if I rented 2 or 3 times minimum, I probably would. Do I sound a tad bitter about my Europcar experience? I am. Grrrrr.

Agreed but not complaining. Just back from Italy where three days' use of a Giulietta from Avis cost me just 10 euros.

I have an annual policy from Questor which covers rentals by both me and my wife and with both of us driving. I think it's around £60. But then this year I will have got through the thick end of 10 rentals, so it makes sense.
