There's a company called Racing Line Vans racelinesportsvans.com/ that do this sort of thing to Transporters. They're breathtakingly expensive.

Having seen the average T5 owner, there are at least 2 stages of evolution too many on that sticker.

They certainly are a keen bunch. The guys who painted etc Bess recently have quite a few customised to one degree or another.

I've noticed now that there are several two or three year old Golf R's about that the inner tailpipe on each side of the quad exhaust is noticeably darker than the nice clean outer pipes. A dead giveaway that not all four pipes are really blowing.

The same applies to loads of cars - Audi S3 for example. My 320d with the sport exhaust (that has no noticeable effect on sound) is the same, only one of them gets sooty and no matter how hard I've tried the inner pipe remains clean!

Could that be to do with restrictors opening up only at certain speeds when the engine might be burning cleaner?

I've tried everything including being in Sport+ mode for a reasonable length of time and nothing works. I suppose if I washed the car more often it wouldn't be so noticeable but at the moment its dirtier than your Volvo

It’s not a sports exhaust, the SE has the same one, the doubling of pipes was just so it looks better in the company car park and you can tell the difference between a 18d and 20d. I was following a newish TT that had one black exhaust and one shiny one, it looked weird. Mine get dirty at the same rate (one either side), as do the ones on the Boxster, but that’s because it’s a 1 into 2 system just before the tailpipes.

I've seen other 320ds with a single pipe. I meant that mine has the BMW Performance exhaust (according to the stamp on them) but even they only appear to use one of the pipes.

They changed all the 20d engines from one to two pipes after a couple of years. There isn’t an M performance exhaust for your engine, the previous owner must have just fitted the tailpipes?

I think it came as part of the pack along with the blue calipers maybe.

Like the number of T5's I see with "One life. Live it!" it's a van FFS - you're getting from A to B (mostly with a lethargic diesel), not living some fantastic life that the rest of us are supposed to envy

I'm not even sure we will be allowed into Cornwall for our hols next year without a T5 or T6 transporter. I think I just about got away with it this year as I put T6 on the booking form but omitted Volvo.
