Daughter no 2, the one who owns the Jag estate has decided she needs a seven seat car - I can only think of the things that say, "I've given up on on cars" - things like the Zafira, C Max, Touran etc - aside from an S Max - anything else a tad interesting I'm not thinking about? Must be something that's been around long enough to have dropped to banger prices.

Banger prices??? The old Galaxy. Just make sure you check that the A/C is working properly before buying one as they can be a nightmare in time and money to sort out when they go wrong.

The Mk2 Zafira was decent enough (so long as the recall has been done and it won't catch fire). Why seven seats? Why not a bigger estate?

The Mk2 Zafira was decent enough (so long as the recall has been done and it won't catch fire). Why seven seats? Why not a bigger estate? Seven seats? - women's logic I guess - she's a child minder so often has a car full. Zafira is very practical but rather bland after a Mini and an X-Type (hers looks particularly nice in sport spec) - Mazda 5 was something I'd forgotten about but not exactly full of character but no doubt very reliable - the funny Fiat things are a bit long in the tooth now. and only had six seats. I don't think the rear facing seats of a Merc estate would cut it. A nicely kept 504 would probably be nice (but no doubt out of price range now), but the way she keeps a car would not be something to inflict on a classic, plus of course carrying kids, you'd want modern safety standards. Having had a quick look round, I think an S-Max is the most interesting option. Volvo XC is a good shout I hadn't thought of.

Just had a quick look at XC 90s - 54/55 plates seem to offer good value and doesn't seem hard to find a nicely cared for example - thanks for the suggestion.

I'm guessing that suggesting she mind less children isn't very helpful ?

Being serious.......
If child minding is her business, then driving other people's pride and joy in some crappy old Zafira isn't going to go down very well - so I'd go beyond " banger " spec.
A smart S-Max or XC90 is probably the way to go.
Budget dependent - a Disco 3 might be in scope, although I'll let everyone else open the " reliability " discussion. Also in the wild card section is the R-Class Merc (6 seater) - but reliability comments are equally applicable
E-class estates can have jump seats in the boot, but practically they may be less than optimal.
I'd vote S-Max every time.

My thoughts too, and it appears those two options have found favour from looking at a few ads - you seem to get a lot of car for the money now with both of those and they both seem to be cars where you don't have to look far to find a nicely cared for example - rather like the Jag - a lot of her friends thought she must have spent quite a bit on it, whereas she ended up £300 to the good selling a 51 plate Mini and buying a 54 plate X-type.
I think a Disco would be too big/expensive.
Knowing her, it will take 12 months before I can reveal the outcome!

Ah, I see the logic if she is a childminder. Safety-wise, I think the Mk2 Zafira will be reasonable enough. The Flex 7 seats are quite good, too. Like you say, however, they are rather dull. S-Max sounds like a decent suggestion.

S-Max sounds like a decent suggestion. Zafira's are dull but cheap to run. I think the running costs of an XC90 or Disco will be somewhat prohibitive for the average childminder - unless she lives and works in Racing's neck of the woods of course! You could always look for Zafira VXR if a cooking one is too boring.

I suspect that an S-Max is the best balance of affordability and running costs.

A lady down the road has recently (few months) bought a 53 plate Zafira. She has bought a real wrong'un. Needs it to carry all her triathlon gear with friends but this one is a complete pile of shit. Looks horrid with nasty non OEM wheels and she's constantly having the bonnet up and mechanics out. I'd rather give up all hope in life than drive that and sit in a chair all day pissing my pants

A 53 plate will be the 1st gen won't it? Second gen much improved. I had one for a week in Switzerland a few years back and carried 5 of us plus 5 suitcases with ease and did the job perfectly. It was bland and grey but if it's just for child carrying duties, why not?
Before GBB comes along and suggests it, Honda FRV?

Toyota Verso? Seat Alhambra? VW Touran? Thanks - Verso might be in the frame, Touran really falls into the same camp as the Zafira - rather grey... Honda FRV is a good shout - I knew there would be a Honda I'd forgotten about!

A neighbour of ours used to have one (swapped it for a Disco3 just before he moved) and one of the things I remember he didn't like was the way it 'ate' front tyres! I think Tim used to have one (or two?) didn't he, PG too, so one of them would be better placed to comment.
As 4x4's go, I've always liked the look of Shoguns to be honest, but not really a place for such a beast in my life - not as things stand at present anyway.

I had one of the early 2nd generation ones - a 92 J plate. It had a mighty 99BHP from its 2.5 TD engine - it was fairly crude and mechanical but I felt that gave it a bit of honesty. It was ok and certainly didn't put me off them (to the extent that I periodically look at the post 2000 shape ones) The one John linked to is decent but if you're prepared to go for a higher mileage one they can be a lot cheaper at that age. I think the only big issue to be wary of is head gaskets

The Zafira Tourer is presumably cheap, and doesn’t combust as often as regular Zafiras

. As the Shogun is switchable and proper AWD (i.e can be run as AWD on dry tarmac as it has a centre differential), they are RWD unless you switch them. So they only eat front tyres if your drive it round in AWD all day or corner like a muppet. We got 60k miles out of our first set of tyres, so I can't describe that as "eating them". Ours is an 09 plate and it has been totally reliable.

Is that centre diff fully locked or is it LSD? I suspect LSD as it would wind up on dry tarmac. I drove a Hilux with a very heavy trailer and needed low range to descend a bank to the barn - that diff was fully locked as the sounds while turning on a dry surface weren’t nice. It had a locking rear as well which I believe some of the Shoguns do.
