A question I posed to a journo at the Blenheim Palace car show recently...
''do you ever think we will see a return to new cars designed with pop-up headlights?'' his answer was 'unlikely' but he'd love to see manufacturers develop an active monitoring system to instantly lower the units should it sense an impact with a pedestrian is likely.
I can see someone making that possible.
I guess with EU pedestrian safety regulations saying headlights must be a certain height and bonnets have to be 'active' so that a pedestrian can't do more damage to themselves when they do hit a car the answer will be no, but I'd love to see a return to pop-up headlights.
What is your favourite car with pop-ups too?

Can't see it happening. Added weight, cost, complexity purely for a gimmick. The pop up concept was a solution to a problem that doesn't exist any more. I liked them but they were of their time. Favourite car with them is the Lotus Esprit.

They always suited whatever Lotus they were on and I miss them on the original MX-5. I liked the reverse ones on the 968 too.

Lotus Elan (the '60s one), which means the Mk1 MX-5 must get a mention also.
In the bike world the current R1 has minuscule headlamps, as opposed to the big projectors-behind-windows on mine. I struggle with it as I think it makes the bike look a little soulless: even the TT Hondas have stickers on the front fairings that make them look they have headlamps and it makes them look more pleasant than just a racing number.

NSX is the only answer to the question! (As well as being the car most spoiled by their removal.)

Ditto. And the first Honda NSX as well. Plus this, if only for the fact my father had one:

I don't think they'll ever come back. They were of their time, like pop out side indicators.

I'd like to see a car with a combination of pop up / pop out bits - vents, spoilers, lights, mirrors - that all retract when you lock it.

928 is the answer.
With the progression of LED headlights its one of those areas where you don't need to invest in pop ups as they've become redundant.

I remember the Panther Solo with rotating headlamps causing a bit of fuss but that ended quickly enough. Autocar were quite impressed with it.
