.. .. .. the Legacy is broken! On the way home tonight came a sudden nasty smell, 'battery' light came on and PAS ceased to be. A quick peruse under the bonnet resulted in finding what appears to be a snapped ancillary belt tensioner, which hopefully hasn't led to much more damage than needing a new tensioner and belts (just to be on the safe side mostly). The car was taken to the dealers via Green Flag, where it awaits a look-see first thing tomorrow; hire car booked for collection, also first thing. Really could have done without this really, but there it is. What pics I managed to get .. .. I think this pulley wheel .. .. .. .. should be attached to this (broken) shaft .. .. .. and has resulted in this loose (!) belt.

Just seen your Facebook post. Definitely a belt tensioner failure so should be easy to sort.

Bummer. Provided no bits flying off have damaged anything else then I would think a new tensioner and belt should be in order.
Fingers crossed.

News from the Eastern Front (well, Falkirk anyway, which is East of here .. .. ) New tensioner pulley and idler, new belts and auto-headlight adjuster fixed too while they're at it; £399.04 inc VAT. Nothing like as bad as it could have been and quite affordable.
And, breeeaathe .. .. ..
Edited to add: can't see the pictures I uploaded, on this PC at least - anyone else not seeing them?

I'm seeing the photos OK at work, and the damage bill seems very reasonable for the work involved... how long before it's ready to collect?

Pictures fine and financial damage, dare I say it, "quite resonable". Big question is though, as Green Flag got you home, does this still count as a non-breakdown?

How long depends on how soon they can get the parts delivered; if they're (I'm) lucky, they'll get them tomorrow, if not it'll be Tuesday, as they don't get a delivery on a Monday for some reason! If they can get it fixed by Wednesday I'll be fine, if not I'll have to extend the hire period for another day.

I take it that engine is a non-contact one then?

My net nanny keeps telling me that they have been blocked!
Glad the car is relatively easily sorted.

Pleased all is sorted without any major damage and at least you have the reassurance now that there are new parts fitted and ready for the next hundred thousand plus miles. Good to hear my friend

I take it that engine is a non-contact one then? It’s chain driven on the Subaru H6. The belt is for ancilliary use only.

It must be that on my work PC too, as I can see them fine on my MBP here at home. First I've had that though; must be part of the "upgrade" the IT department did last weekend.
