After learning to drive on a tractor when I was 10, and then learning to drive a car as a 13 year old, today 30 years later I did my California driving test. It was ridiculously easy and the only thingI needed to be aware of was looking over my shoulder more when I reverse.
I spent the entire 15 minutes chatting with the tester about when she lived in Kent!

Congratulations! I hate looking over my shoulder when reversing - I nearly always use mirrors.

Congratulations! I hate looking over my shoulder when reversing - I nearly always use mirrors. Likewise, to the point I've never looked over my shoulder to reverse since I passed my test in 1980! * Other than to check for erratic pedestrians, I should add.

Thanks! I’ve a piece of paper that says I can drive now. The surreal bit is they they asked me who had accompanied me in the car and I said nobody did as I’ve a full Irish driving licence.
Strange thing is I only got the licence to have local ID. It’s amazing how many times Americans struggle to understand a date of birth that’s day- month- year and when it’s explained, they say it’s weird...

Congratulations Rodge - missed saying so first time round! As with many other things, isn't Month-Day-Year something only the yanks do? Weird indeed .. .. ..

And congratulations Rodge.

Congratulations. A whole 15 minute driving test?? Yes, I also know someone who failed the test twice before getting her licence. I went in the car with her once and was terrified. Never again.. The actual licence arrived last week and has a lot more security measures on it than a European licence. I also realised I’ve been driving longer than my tester has been alive, since I first drove tractors as a 10 year old and then the family Mini when I was 13.

Does that allow you to drive a manual as well as an automatic? Presumably most Americans take the test in an auto - and are they then legally able to be unleashed on a manual? - from the times you see them drive a manual it seems there is something in the American genes that prevents them driving a manual well?

It allows me to drive anything that’s under 26,000lb gvw and has no more than 2 axles. It also covers auto and manual vehicles, which explains a lot.
