Only online photo I can find is the Autocar front cover: www.autocar.co.uk/magazineI've often wondered how Land Rover's styling expertise would translate to a road car - very well it turns out, and I guess with all the road car manufacturers making off roaders it was inevitable that Land Rover would do the opposite.

Given where most Land/Range Rovers spend their time, they're already Road Rovers.

Land Rover's styling expertise I didn't know it had any these days.
Ghastly idea.

They seem to be cutting the styling cake into ever-smaller slices. A 'no' from me.

Good idea. Will be interesting to see what they come up with.

The atticle states - "For this week's Autocar, we've peered into the Autocar crystal ball to reveal all about the Road Rover, a top-secret, street-biased Mercedes-Benz S-Class rival from Land Rover that's not due out for another two years."
This sounds like a god idea, but I always thought that the Land Rover S class rival was the Range Rover? Now that the Velar is treading on the RR Sport's shoes (price wise and market wise), then I expect this means that the Range Rover will move even further up the price tree into Bentgayer / Cullinan territory and the RR Sport will be moved to occupy the price point of the current Range Rover. Or you can have a road based Road Rover that in somewhere in the middle.

It still looks like a tall posh roader though, so I see no real need for it.

You can picture those who will, though.

You can picture those who will, though. Former S-class customers, presumably?

If it looks like the image on the front of Autocar, that's not who I am picturing.

I personally wouldn't judge anybody for buying the car they wanted.

I'm quite happy to notice how frequently stereotype and reality tally.

All in the eye of the beholder I guess - to me, with the exception of Kia, they make the only good looking off roaders. It's a much less ghastly idea to me than Porsche, Bentley or Rolls Royce making an off roader - all of which has resulted in truly ugly looking vehicles.

I'm quite happy to notice how frequently stereotype and reality tally. Same here, it's not always accurate but I reckon I have a decent hit-rate!

Now I've read the article in the magazine, it says that the next Jag XJ will be based on a new aluminium platform that can support electric and ICE propulsion and that this Road Rover will be built on that platform. JLR sources are quoted as saying that a decision has been taken not to do an electric only Range Rover (as was muted before I seem to remember) as this would be to hard to make safe for full-on off road use (especially with regard to wading). Although I'm sure as non-ICE cars become more common, that will have to be reappraised at some point (when technology allows), or else that halo car and range will die in the future and I can't see JLR accepting that.

Creaming my pants over that rear 3/4 view. Lots of want. Really? Looks like an elephant has sat on the back of the roof to me. I hate rooflines that slope excessively downwards at the rear

Creaming my pants over that rear 3/4 view. Lots of want. That rendition is very Merc CLS estate at the back isn't it? Which is kind of ironic as the Merc CLS saloon design aped the Jag XJ saloon rear and now Land Rover are going to ape the CLS estate.

It's an Autocar imagination of what a Road Rover might look like.
