Need some forum ideas! My parents' 2006 Terracan 2.9 diesel (160bhp ish) is beginning to show its age in the form of various failures, none of which are terminal or vastly expensive on their own but add up to a gently increasing cost. It is at that continue to repair or replace the car point. It's a big old thing, distinctly old school, not at all refined but it has been pretty reliable really. My dad is now thinking about changing it, possibly in the early new year, depending upon what the MOT throws up. Ever encroaching rust on the underside seems to be the biggest concern at the moment, which is a shame as the mileage is low. My folks are just into their 70s now but they still have the caravan and are likely to keep caravanning for a while yet. Any replacement needs to be beefy enough to pull a caravan that is pushing 1500kg fully loaded (plus the weight of stuff in the car itself) and be stable doing so but as a caravanner of 30 odd years my dad doesn't need to be within the 80% car/caravan weight ratio. Size wise, any replacement doesn't need to be as big as a Terracan, so maybe mid size SUV/family size estate. SUV, hatch or estate, not saloon. Ideally auto from now on. Plenty of luxury kit. Mileage likely to be well under 10k/year. In terms of budget, I have no idea but I've been looking up to 17k, used.
Now, my dad thinks he might be better ditching diesel due to recent talk of how bad diesels are and potential tax penalties later on. For towing, I'm more of the mind to stay with diesel for now. Whilst AWD isn't a necessity I think it would be a nice-to-have. Parking sensors and cameras might be useful too.
He rather likes a friend's Mazda CX5 and I can see potential there, although the 2.0 petrol is nowhere near torquey enough fr towing in my opinion, certainly not compared to the current 2.9 diesel he has. T5 4 cylinder Volvo petrol turbos are pretty torquey but prices are rather higher than 17k.
My suggestions so far have included XC70s, XC60s, 4x4 Octavia Scouts, 4x4 Yetis or simply something like a well specced Mondeo estate.
Gentlemen of the forum, do your thing.

I must add here that a discussion on this subject last time I visited lead to complete exasperation on my part. My mum went on about how the Caravan Club magazine said that Ssangyongs were good for towing and I concluded I was all but wasting my time! Anyway, maybe a few decent options will stave off a fucking Ssangyong.

I would suggest a Nissan X-Trail or Toyota RAV4 or something by Kia with the balance of a 7 year warranty.

They get a new car and you get none of the fall out.

Er, I've driven a few SsangYongs and thought they were ok (probably better than a Terracan anyway). Actually the last one I drove - a 62 plate Rexton - was at least the equal of a 58/59 plate Disco 3 (or is it a 4, who knows) that I drove around the same time. It had the Merc 5 pot diesel which was a bit thirsty though.
The 2 litre diesel, with autobox, that was in the Korrando Sport pickup was quite decent too.
Obviously they're not for booting down a twisty road but then not everyone's looking for that capability. I think they have decent reliability and warranties too which may help your folks. Cheap too.

Audi A6 Allroad?
A Vignale Mondeo with all the bells and whistles sees a good bet if he's going to keep it 10 years or as a left field what about a Levorg?

Another shout for the Vignale. Handsome car kitted out nicely. The petrol one has 250 torques and the diesels are either 280 or 330. I reckon it will feel like a palace compared to just about anything else mentioned so far.

I think the X-trail has the CVT Transmission if they are looking at auto ... probably noisier and less reliable than other types of auto. Do they need a higher driving position of an SUV, and would the height of an SUV be better for towing their 'van?
I'd have thought that a used XC60 would be a good starting point based on the prices that, was it Nelson, pointed out not so long ago. A Kuga diesel auto could be worth looking at too although I don't know how the second-hand prices stand up.... but mine (although manual) has plenty of toys like reversing camera, full-length glass roof, electric powered tailgate, parking sensors, heated front seats.....

Freelander 2 is a possibility. Good for towing and plenty about. Way, way more reliable than the earlier Freelander. HSE's have lots of kit and have a bit more cachet than the Ssangyong / Kia / Hyundai possibilities. www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201707287797326

How do petrol Tiguans fare for towing?
According to a quick Google, the car currently recommended by the daredevil YOLO-types at the Caravan Club as Tow Car of the Year 2017 is....the Volkswagen Passat Estate Alltrack 2.0TDI 4MOTION 150PS
2016: Land Rover Discovery HSE LUX 2015: SEAT Leon Sport Tourer (ST) FR 2.0 TDI. 2014: Škoda Superb Elegance Estate 2.0 TDI
The Leon is an interesting idea.

I'd probably be looking at a 2 year old XC70 with the balance of the 5 year service back and 1 year remaining warranty. Make sure you find one with about 35k miles and the optional tinted windows, spare wheel and essential winter pack. As it happens I have one just like that for sale.

Budget would help. My initial thought was to get a Yeti 2.0 TDI. It'll be more than up to the job and as it's going out of production there's probably a deal to be had. Another option could be the Dacia Duster, I've heard they're good tow cars but not sure what weight they can take as they only come with a 1.5 diesel. The Superb diesel is a great shout but I wonder if they'd really want to go away from an SUV to a regular car.

So long as you properly jetwash bits of your country estate from the underside and remove ALL traces of Newfoundland hairs. Funnily enough I did wonder whether yours might fit the bill.

I pointed out a possibility to my dad, earlier today, in the shape of a Kia Sportage 2.2 CRDi at 17k which he said looked OK but ideally he would like to spend less than that, depending on what's available. I'm assuming 17k is the upper amount. Some interesting suggestions up there, thanks.

I like the Yeti and I have floated the idea although I think it's kerbweight might be an issue with their current caravan.

The boot has been lined in Roll-and-stole since day one. I always knew I'd need to sell it.

I like that, up with the posh Mondeo on spec but with a decent engine

I think a V70XC would be ideal really but need to get my dad out round some garages without any interference from my mum.

I've had it two years, it's going next month. Truth is there are loads of them around and you'd find a decent one with ease. Mine seems to have higher than average miles at 36k, there a plenty around with much lower.

That 2 years seems to have gone by quickly. Did I miss what the replacement is or is it yet to be revealed?

There has been no reveal, I don't think it warrants that much interest! I'm going to get a Discovery after much consideration (about two years worth, actually) about what to do. Was tempted to get a van and a Cayman but figure I can hold off on the Cayman for now, build my extension then get that in addition to a Disco - will be a much better pairing.

You looking at a new Disco or the last of the previous generation? Sounds like it'll suit you better either way, though it's a shame you never gelled with the Volvo. I think a van would piss you off just as quickly, even if you did have a Cayman to enjoy when the dogs stay at home.

It'll be a 4. I flirted with the idea of a new one but I really love the design of the last one which helps as it'll be twenty grand cheaper.
