I cleaned the steering wheel in the BMW a couple of weeks ago and it looked like it was starting to wear around the 2 o'clock position. I mentioned it when it was in for service, they cleaned it and told me it was dirt which came off on the cloth. Looking at it afterwards, it looked a bit worse to me, so the service manager took pictures to send off to BMW. He said at nearly 80k miles it's likely they would say it's general wear that was down to the driver and to be fair, it's not that noticeable, but I wanted to register it with them before it's 3 years old.
Missed a call from them today, they were calling me to book the car in for a new steering wheel. First issue, but dealt with really well and it will be like having a new car (kind of...) so I'm happy.

Good result. I got a new steering wheel under warranty last year as well. The car was in for a service and I mentioned when I dropped it off that there was some blemishing to the leather on the top of the rim, nearest the windscreen. I didn't expect to get anywhere but when I picked it up in the afternoon it had a new wheel!

One for other BMW owning forum members to watch out for.

Hmm. Mine is re-covered by Alpina so probably no chance of a claim for me, although at 67k miles the wheel is doing fine.

I, too, would be bothered by a blemished rim.
I can't imagine many other manufacturers going to those lengths, definitely a good result.
