This months Evo has an RS4 & C63 comparison - similar opinionto Autocar in that the Audi is an immensely capable and effective machine and (in the wet Jan conditions) the faster of the two across ground but the Merc is surprisingly close in the wet and significantly more involving and interesting.
They give the nod to the Merc.

I'd take the Audi just for the interior.

I'd take the Audi just for the interior. The virtual cockpit and the seats are very special.

I'd take the Audi just for the interior. Which just shows how different tastes can be because I find Audi's latest interior design language curiously dated - it's those enormous full-length air-vents. I'm not a particular fan of Mercedes' interiors, but they make Audis look dull, dour and dated, no matter how well made.
Plus it annoys me that Audi UK have decided that UK consumers must have black or grey leather and silver trim. Other markets get other trim options.

I don’t much care for Audi design inside or out at the moment but the interiors remind me of a stacked stereo system with all the components being sourced from a different manufacturer. It just doesn’t quite work as a whole and looks a bit 80s. The colour choice is as bad in Mercedes as you can’t get much other than black in AMG trim.

I find Mercs new widescreen dashboard thing a bit 80s as well. Not sure why!

I think we need to remember that the Germans are in love with David Hasselhoff. To ze Germans, 80's kitsch is where it is at. Which explains Merc and Audi interiors. Designers at BMW and VW have clearly been exposed to more non-German influences.

What's annoying is that BMW offers a nicely wide range of interior colour schemes and trims, but charges an absolute fortune (thick end of £4k) if you want the thing painted anything other than the standard colour choices, which are usually a dreary range of whites, silvers, greys and blacks with a couple of overly lairy "hero" colours (I mean what normal person wants a reasonably subtle and elegant car like a 4-series and then wants it painted vivid "Sunset Orange" or an equally startling swimming pool colour called (I kid you not) "Snapper Rocks Blue"?). Whereas Audi restricts you for the interior to black or silver but allows you to paint the car pretty much any colour you like for £2,450.
Not sure what Mercedes' pricing for Designo is like.

I was just looking at the new 5 Series on the BMW configurator and the choice of exterior colours is dull, dull, dull with absolutely no 'hero' colours at all.
You can have your leather upholstery in dark blue though.

I reckon that individuality is being targeted as the current cash cow by the car companies. By making the basic choice so boring people feel forced into paying £900 for paint and £1,500 for leather which in reality cost the manufacturer about the price of a tube of smarties extra.

I was surprised to see that on the current 520i an upgrade from the standard 18 inch alloys to 19s is free! Are they losing the plot?

BMW do offer a wide range of interior colours, but most of them are pretty awful, especially when you upgrade to the decent leathers. Well, they’re not to my taste anyway.
As an example, the 7 Series has 7 Nappa options, but the only one other than black I think I could live with is Mocha. Full Merino is too much of an extravagance at £5,375, but there isn’t an option I like anyway.

Standard wheels on a 520/525 are 17s on the SE or 18s on the M Sport. The 530/540 gets 18s on the SE and 19s on the M Sport. Adding the Plus pack increases the wheel size again.

I'd rather have those full length grilles than the mk1 Cortina rear lights you get in some Mercs.

Car 1 has the standard Audi "paedo's shoe" leather;
Car 2 has some kind of extra-cost Exclusive leather;
Car 3 - I'd forgotten that Audi has now added a particularly vivid shade of what I believe Blarno memorably refers to as "dog's cock red" to the available palette for "S" Audis.

In reality the BMW red (which they call "Coral Red") is a less in-your-face shade than the Audi equivalent. Maybe Audi's latest interiors are better but they certainly used to be very much a strong tart's lipstick shade.

Yes, the red in older Audi’s is a lot more garish, Magma red is very similar to BMW Coral red. As you can see from the picture, only the seat facing is red which helps tone it down even further.

My 320 has the Coral Red leather and its certainly not as vivid as the photo suggests.
It was the same in the Alfa GT I had - the red photographed a lot differently from how it looked in real life, it was a lot more pink in photos I think.
