It's nothing new. Under EU rules tenders for this sort of thing have to be put out to companies Europewide. De La Rue won the contract for passports 10 years ago on the same basis. Of course the French don't abide by this rule and insist their passports are made in La Republique.

I see this is amusing given the context (passports vs made overseas) but in reality I don't see the issue: how many constituent parts of anything we buy are sourced from one country? If anything it hails the fact that Brexit or otherwise the UK will continue to do business with other nations and companies from other nations. And their workforces.

In fact I think that the UK is the only EU country that actually follows the proper EU tendering process. Everyone else has an open tender and then gives the business to a local company.

I'm not a fan of protectionism so I'm happy for the Franco-Dutch company to come in £100million cheaper to get the contract.

I imagine if De La Rue did win the contract they wouldn’t be sourcing all the paper, chemicals etc for the passports from British suppliers. And as a manufacturer running a factory full of minimum wage staff in the north east I’m sure there’s not a brown face or Eastern European accent anywhere to be seen amongst their staff.

Yes, I pass their factory on the Team Valley regularly and the car park is always full of the destitute, cap in hand, hoping to be taken on for a day's labour to provide bread for their families' table.

Another interesting point of note is that De La Rue just happen to also manufacturer of passports to 40 other countries, so following their own logic, shouldn’t those countries also find their own domestic pastport supplier? The company they lost out to, Gemalto, have five office locations in the UK and I imagine this contract will potentially increase that number. And another slightly amusing fact is that Gemalto’s global head office address is: 6, rue de la Verrerie - CS20001

My cynical mind also assumes that De La Rue probably shuffle money around offshore to reduce their tax bill and thus their protestations are over-egged.
Clearly I don't know that, there have just been other cases where 'British' companies do this sort of thing.

That just proves that those that want to be offended can be offended by anything. Was should be happening is that the complainant should be being offered psychological help for seeing and hearing evil where it does not exist. The "good egg" comment was just as comically "offended-generation" stuff.

Some years ago I had an issue with my cock and went to the doctor. Just my luck the one that saw me was about 30, female and very attractive. This was when I was going through marriage difficulties. I had no problem whipping it out and letting her have a look at it. In the end I had the operation that could suggest I had changed my religion and the issue was solved (although along the way I had some tests one of which resulted in a second hole next to my Jap's Eye) but no way am I ever not going to the doctor because I'm embarrassed about it!

Placed on restricted duties as well - but on full pay I assume so not only is money being wasted on that but the cost of the investigation - 12 months - appears to be a significant wate of scarce resources.

The story describes a memo, rather than a ban. So stupid though it is, they have made the headline up.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/8253908/travelodge-digger-driver-liverpool-edge-lane-john/Guy goes mental after a banking glitch means he didn’t get paid on Friday so he destroys a new hotel reception area. I think what irritates me the most is the go fund me page set up in his support. All of that money should go to Travelodge and he should have attachment of earnings/benefit sanctions until the day he dies/until the damage he caused is paid off.
