Just out of interest, for now at least, are any of the manufacturers doing cheap deals on superminis?
I remember from a couple of years ago that you could get yourself into something like a Toyota Aygo for £100 down and £100 per month. Are these still out there?

A friend of mine got a Fiat 500 Abarth for £200 initial payment then and just under £200 a month. It's a four year thing but for that money you're basically being given a car.

I had in mind something that would be comfy on our piss-poor country roads and that you wouldn't mind firing across speed bumps on a depressingly regular basis. Also something with fairly skinny tyres for driving in winter but not needing winter tyres.

You could get a Dacia Sandero for something stupid like £1750 down and £75 a month
My dad is probably going to get a new skoda citi-go. It was 0% finance recently too. The deal was something like £1200 down and £120 a month for 4 years

A new Fiesta Zetec will be almost infinitely better than a Sandero and can be had for £179 down, £179 a month for 38 months.
Buy a pre 2009 car now for as little as possible and you could trade in at the end of December and get one for £149 down, £149 a month.

I got an invite yesterday to a Nissan event and they're apparently offering massive discounts on new and pre-reg stuff.
I presume this is the start of it as car sales, and finance volumes, have continued to fall over the summer, plus they'll know how good September is going to be - I'm guessing the invite means its gonna be poor!

I have the feeling that there are some great deals to be had this month. The dealers need the registrations and they haven't done the numbers yet. There are lots of £40K+ Mercs being offered at £229 to £299/mth with low deposit. A neighbour I spoke to last night has just taken an in stock GLC with a list of £42K and he has paid less than £1,000 deposit and will pay £299/mth. He reckons he was shafted by about £1,000 on his E Class coupe trade in but he is getting cash back on that and a new car for not a lot. I think the car will be through his business so it is likely those prices will be + VAT. He gets it tomorrow.

I was thinking that yesterday as I struggled past a couple of cars in the 320, wonder what deals you can get on a 330/335D just now!

I’m looking to get my Discovery in the next few weeks and still not sure it’s the time for the best deals.

Everything car dealers do is dictated by calendar quarters. The quarter to 30th September has ended and there were some great deals to get cars through in September. However when dealers have pre Regd vehicles to make their targets, they are often very keen to convert that metal into money and you will still get great deals into October. When the cars are gone though, you have to wait until the end of the next quarter.
Nearly new probably means franchised dealer but it depends how "nearly". Would pre Reg count or are we talking about one a year old. 4x4's start to sell better through the winter so prices are firmer especially when we get the first snow.

John Clark had 335D's at £329/mth down and £329/mth. They were on Facebook advertising just a week or so ago. There are good deals to be had on the big diesels just now but the best deals are for in stock cars so you might need to phone around.
A friend just bought a Mini Cooper S today from Grassicks and because it was an in stock car, he got more than £1,000 off the best internet price he could find plus cheap finance. Still deals to be had but that Mini was one of only two cars they would do a deal on.

Generally speaking a self reg has to be held by the dealer for 3 months before they are allowed to sell it on, so you might do better in December. They would, I am sure, allow you to pre-purchase if you wished.
I would not be at all surprised, however, if dealers have a way around this legal requirement with other methods of registration.
There is no reason not to push your dealer in any month now, as they will often have qualifying targets or mid month incentive that will see them deal the same as a quarter end.
Finally, after any hedging has passed, don't be surprised to see prices go up. If it is more profitable to sell elsewhere in Europe then companies will, and margins and marketing spend in the UK will fall if the pound is worth fewer euros. The current very low finance rates won't go in forever either.

Talking of cheap and new there was a 17 plate Golf R on AT the other day with 9 miles on the clock for £24K. It was a repossession...

The current very low finance rates won't go in forever either. That is a bit of a worrying prognosis for the UK car buyer. Is it buy now or forever miss what you wanted? JLR are already more expensive than the German competition so I can't see them stepping in to fill the gap with reasonable prices.

Cheers John Just had a look at Grassicks, they kindly list the registration date of their 'used' cars. Their sales admin person/people were clearly VERY busy on 28th & 29th of June......... Sadly it's all fairly basic stuff apart from a 330d saloon.

I want it to be an estate plus the need hasn't been fully established yet (although I'm working on it!).
