Exciting topic I know but our current policy (buildings and contents) with M&S is up for renewal and am just checking out alternatives as the renewal quote is quite punchy (£800). Anyone got any good suggestions (beyond the usual suspects) for higher value cover?

£800 seems a huge amount for what I assume should be a relatively modest rebuild cost vs price of house. Have you got a lot of items of high value listed? Mines something like half that with L&G

Look at AXA. I get up to £1m rebuild with £80k contents for about £500.

Hastings, via confused. £1m rebuild, £150k contents for a hell of a lot less than £800.

That seems a lot.
We had it pointed out to us at our remortgage that the rebuild costs (for a detached house at least) are a con because the land is already owned but for a new build that's a substantial part of the cost.

Do home insurance policies change on the postcode? A bit like car insurance does/did?

Try Tesco home insurance; I used them a couple of years ago but I now use the local brokers in the High Street

Ha, the rebuild costs are just £200k (because it's a modern building and most of the value is in the pocket handkerchief of land in Fulham that it sits on).
The M&S policy is from Axa. It may be worth trying them directly.

AXA do two policies. £500k and £1m. I have them because they cover all outbuildings unspecified as long as the total value is covered under the rebuild costs. It means the stables are covered.

That is interesting. The Axa quote system is exactly the same as the M&S one unsurprisingly. The policies are not exactly like-for-like in terms of coverage but they are close enough and....where M&S quoted £796....Axa quote £573.
That's already a result, so thanks.

Have you tried Hiscox? I don't have any experience of them but I think they aim to cater to the sector of the market you fall into. I am with Aviva and their premium is very competitive for the cover I need, as it is for my cars with them.

My house is with a regional company, €1064 per year, rebuild cost €2.4M. Seems quite reasonable

Is your house attached to others, Jonny? That might make a significant difference.

Used AXA before; will probably again due to their contents element being pretty good (I've got "stuff" that is expensive like watches, guitars, diamonds and largely included as opposed to being single insurable items).

Is your house attached to others, Jonny? That might make a significant difference. It's semi-detached.
