I was off work last week and set myself a project. Having looked at the cost of pergolas available to buy as kits I was less then impressed by their substance, so I built my own. Not quite finished but really quite pleased with myself on this one:

Good man points earned there, you're grass looks in good order too considering the big dogs.

Yes... I always remember the day I went to view a house that had in the agent's particulars a "pagoda" in the back garden. I Was naturally disappointed to find out that they meant a "pergola". That does indeed look impressive and worthy of quite af few man points. I hope the dogs don't savage the support posts too much, or find a way of climbing up on top.....

My malware software now seems to think that all photos on this site are dangerous so I am afraid I can't see anything but it sounds like good work.
My gardening work this weekend is going to be restricted to some bug killing. Last winter the leatherjackets (daddy long leg larvae) killed off half my grass, so this year they are getting it! It sounds a bit gruesome but you spread some microscopic bugs on your grass and they seek out and destroy the larvae before they get a chance to grow into grass killers.

Are you going to be holding wedding ceremonies under there in the Summer?

About the right size for a Newfie kennel isn't it!? Jesting aside, very good manskills!

Very impressive. I'll need to go home and take a picture of the pile of stones that I will be turning into a wall at some point in the distant future

Thanks all. I worked out a similar size bought version would have cost over £1k and would have been much flimsier. All in this was under £500 so a bit of a bargain. I've enjoyed making it and it's strong enough to suspend a Cocoon tent from so that's a bonus.

That looks great, top man points. Did you have a plan or design for the construction? I would like to build a rose covered walkway one day and your design looks perfect when scaled down

I had a plan in my head when I started but it evolved as I went along. It's 8ft x 24ft. Happy to draw it up for you.

That does indeed look very impressive, how much for the materials?

That looks great. I detest gardening. I don't mind cutting grass, but that is about it.

That does indeed look very impressive, how much for the materials? As I say it was under £500. I got trade on all the wood except the main posts which are 8' gate posts and cost £18 each.

Forgive me if I sound a bit thick, what's the point as there is no roof? The cross bars give a bit of shade but it's to grow climbing plants up which then increase the shade.

Very, very impressive. We looked at a pergola some years ago and you are right- the costs v quality of bought ones are pretty shocking.
