I followed a new Q5 briefly yesterday evening and as he approached his turn off he started braking BEFORE he flicked on the indicator, you know, the narrow strip one that starts by the numberplate and goes across to the side rather than simply flashing as a whole.
However, due to the intensity of the brake lights I only realised he was indicating when he stopped braking.
How did that ever get signed off? Don't they follow each other during testing, or is it simply that, like so many of the end users, they don't bother using the indicators?
It's a piss-poor piece of design.

This is particularly bad on Audi's with the thin line indicators and the uber-bright LED braklights. But quite a few other cars are starting to get the same issue - the sheer brightness of the brake lights overcomes the indicators.

Not a comment about brake lights vs indicators, but that Lexus' Rx model has the same wanky LED indicator strip on the tailgate which then morphs into a regular bulb on the rear quarter!
Either/or chaps, that arrangement looks really terrible!

The age-old designer's quandary. Just because you can do something with new tech, does not necessarily mean you should!

It's like front indicators in the headlamp unit, if the headlights are on, you can't always see the indicator when it is on.

It's like front indicators in the headlamp unit, if the headlights are on, you can't always see the indicator when it is on. Just make the indicators brighter, they are in mine. Unlike most cars with the indicators built into the headlight unit (mine are a strip across the top), the DRLs don't dim when the indicators come on, because they don't need to. If they were static, I could see well enough in the dark with just them on! Audi are particularly bad when it comes to over bright brake lights, sitting behind an A7 in traffic is painful.

The Golf Mk4 is particularly bad for the hidden front indicator and I recently nearly pulled out in front of a Merc CLS at a roundabout because I missed their indicator. Audi brake lights are ridiculous and we're now approaching the time of year it will be at its worst.
