Looks like an over-styled update of the current one.

A return to a soft-top is a surprise. I always understood the retracting hard-top to be a popular feature, especially with female buyers. My wife, not otherwise a noted BMW fan, likes the Z4 her friend has particularly for that feature.
I did have to google what on earth a "Zicker Line" was...
Looks-wise, the jury is out. I'm not entirely sold at first glance, particularly the headlamp/grille combo, but the shape is promising.

I like that a lot. I'm guessing the soft top is down to weight and therefore emissions.

The soft top is more popular with North American buyers for this kind of car.

I actually like that, allowing for a toned down production model. It also looks smaller, more like the current MX-5 in size. That should go well with a 2.0 or a triple with hybrid assist. Enough to hope it will go around a track like the current MX-5 while showing a clean pair of heels on the straights.

I really hope it will look like that, for it is lovely.

This car has bigger dimensions than the current Z4 and is probably nearer to 3 series size. I was reading a bit about the 4 cylinder Jaguar F Type and was surprised to see that it is priced nearly £10K more than the base 4 cylinder Boxster.
With the increase in size and the push upwards in quality I reckon the new Z4 is going to be getting in to Boxster territory and probably be more expensive when fitted with the 3 litre 6 cylinder.

Isn't the F Type more of a 911 competitor though?
After all you can't get a 500BHP Boxster.

Perhaps but a 4 cylinder 290hp F-Type wouldn't get my extra £10K over a Boxster. Neither would a 500hp F Type get my money over a 6 cylinder 911. The F Type is a nice car but over priced: you just need to look at the used prices to see the depreciation is more of a freefall in comparison to the 911's helium powered swan dive.

Are 911 prices being propped up by the current fad for the older ones in the classic market?
Some of the prices being asked for even relatively recent ones are ludicrous and I don't remember 911s of the 80s and 90s being particularly impressive in value retention when they were young.

That's nice from the front wheels back. But the grille and front treatment is pretty awful. Although I expect that will be toned down a lot for the production version.

Well they've managed to fuck up both ends of that one. I'm not a fan of the current Z4 so I'm hardly the correct judge of its replacement but that looks cack to me.

If that ridiculous sticky out chin were on anything without a BMW badge everyone would be taking the piss. Add in the hideous lower grilles either side of the chin and you have Max Power wet dream which is trying waaaay too hard. Not for me.

I'd agree that it looks like a restyle of the existing one, but a very nice restyle - better looking than anything they currently build to my eyes - if they applied the same formula to the 3 series, I think it could result in something rather more interesting.

I think that looks great, I was very interested in the Supra which is based on this but should hopefully have some crazed Japanese styling but understand this is to be Auto only. If BMW can do a proper coupe of the Z4 I'd be all over it.

Chap I met had a manual Z4. Hated every second of ownership. What generation?
Friend of my wife's has a frankly rather gorgeous dark metallic blue 61-plate s23i MSport with a manual gearbox, very nice upgraded alloys and a cream leather and dark wood interior. Makes a very lovely six-cylinder noise and she seems besotted with it - she commutes daily in it. Both my wife and I have always been rather envious of it.
This one is the same paint colour with the same wheels:

I like the look of the Z4, but I wasn't hugely impressed with the 35i I test driove a couple of years back. It was too firm and the steering was poor, but it did make a nice noise. It was a bit too cramped for me as well and with the seat right back, it made an annoying plastic against plastic noise (the Boxster has a carpeted bulkhead). A Boxster is far superior (imho), as long as it has full leather and a sports exhaust.
To be fair, it's far from a terrible car and it depends on what you're coming from / are used to and what else you try, it was nicer that the Swift Sport Lindsay had at the time!
