Another week another white Volvo. This time the V40 R-Design. It's the first time my car had been to the dealership and they've given me something other than an XC90.
The don't look bad from the outside, it isn't a class of lookers but it's relatively inoffensive (white notwithstanding) and the new 'Thor' headlights are a neat detail. It's a tiny little thing, though, nearly lost on the driveway.
Inside it continues the theme of being okay. Nice enough materials, comfortable seats but equipment I've grown unfamiliar with such as manual gearbox and manual handbrake. It also didn't have rain sensing wipers, parking sensors, sat nav or electric seats. It's amazing what you learn to take for granted.
Starting the car things for from okay to not so good. The engine, as is the way with diesel Volvos these days, sounds terrible. It's not that pokey either but makes a racket trying. The gearbox had a nice action but I somehow managed to stall it twice when coming to a stop. It cornered very flat and seemed to hold the road ok until you hit a bump and the rock hard suspension threw you all over the place. The deafening road noise deserves an honourable mention as I drove myself home and back to the dealership and that was it. I had no interest in driving a second on it more than required.
It also stank. Nothing to do with the car as such but the previous user had left a Morrisons buffet salad box of rotting contents in the glovebox and as I had the car on a Monday I assume it had been there all weekend. I presented this to the service advisor along with the keys to the piece of crap that is the Volvo V40:
