Having owned mostly Fords in my life, I loved the E46 325i that I owned for a number of years. Since moving to the USA, all my vehicles have been 3 litre cars or bigger and none of them Fords... I've currently got a Lexus RX300 that's as reliable as can be, and went over 250,000 miles in February. Since putting a performance filter in it and replacing the plugs, it's even better. It's not going to win any drag races but I really like it and will keep it for as long as I'm living here.
However, yesterday I started looking at BMW's on Craigslist and I'm liking what I see. E39 540i with 6 speed manual gearbox, ok mileage and good condition for about $4k, a 2007 525i (3 litre 6) for $3k (about half the going rate- very tempted by this...) 2001 740i.
E46 M3's are generally around $10k, and having driven one, I'd love one.
Yep, very tempted.........

Do it. You'll have the benefit of not having to be too concerned about rampant rust problems either.

Get the M3, you could even export it back to Europe where it's probably worth a whole lot more.

Do it! Although, I admit that if I lived in the States I'd be tempted by some sort of massive yee-haa muscle car of the sort that murderers drive and that you'd never get away with in the UK.

If the numbers work and you can make tha car work, and WANT one, perhaps it is worth a punt. Good luck if you do it, no doubt we can see pictures here which would be good.

US E46 M3 is down on power and torque, probably due to the CAT being higher up the exhaust route.
Also importing one might not be so easy due to the COC not being the same. That said if you're in the US and can find a manual E46 M3 for $10k just buy one. Immediately.

If you have the desire for an E46 M3 and the means to acquire one, I very much doubt that you would regret any decision to buy one. Mine pretty much always brought a smile to my face when I owned it.
