The Mini threw a rear light wobbly and on inspection an earth cable was burned on the board. Now the rear lights come on a single board with a plug that connects all the relevant wires. So I bought a pattern board, spliced the new plug on to the wiring harness, put all the existing bulbs in the holders and all was well.
Now those of you that are used to changing the rear diff of a Land Rover whilst on the move in a field are laughing at my claims of automotive repair success but it’s the first thing I’ve done on a car since changing the front bulb on this same Mini. What I will say is this: changing the entire board of rear lights and fiddling about to pull out and replace the board, rewiring each circuit and testing it all was 10 times easier than changing one single headlamp bulb that I grazed the fuck out of my knuckles doing.
I got a tiny burn on my thumb when initially investigating the problem as the board at the failed earth was hotter than hot. No idea what’s causing this but it’s clearly a common issue as there are videos of the burned plug all over YouTube.

Crap solder and damp most likely.

Excellent work! Those of us who don't take and engine out on a Saturday afternoon when we're bored, applaud a simple repair!!

I've got a fuel tank needing replaced, when are you available?

Add me to the list of the impressed, nice work!
Less so on the bulb change. I've done that job twice in 12 months and it took a few seconds each side thanks to MINI making life easy by having a window in the top of the light unit, so you can easily see the clip in the back.

Yes I know about that little window: I’m just a clumsy feck. 😝

Well done on the wiring. I have never been strong on the electrickery and always much more comfortable with oil and spanners.

All this bulb talk is so 20th Century... 😉
Good work, by the way. A successful DIY repair is a thing of joy.

One extreme to another in this household. Dimly flickering glow worms, or turn night into day LEDs.

One extreme to another in this household. Dimly flickering glow worms, or turn night into day LEDs. I've had classic cars overtake me when I've been cycling at night, and their lights were woeful compared to the torches I use on the bike!!

The ones on the Series are OK for the speeds that does. I have relayed all the head lighting circuits so they are getting alternator voltage as opposed to whatever the toggle switch managed to handle through its aged contacts which is a massive improvement in brightness.

Any form of self spannering - no matter how simple or complex - just gives an enormous sense of self worth.
