Found a fuel log I used to take when I filled up my early cars.
First car, Ford Fiesta mk1, took about 30 litres to fill up at the massive cost of 61.9 UK pence per litre on 20/10/96, costing me £16.00 to top up that day. The car did about 200-250 miles on a full tank when driving longer journeys which was a decent enough 38 MPG or thereabouts. It took leaded fuel!
That works out at about 6 pence per mile when it did 250 miles.
The car I replaced it with, a Mk1 Mondeo 1.8, was unleaded and cost 54.1 pence per litre, with a 55 litre tank on longer journeys gave about 31 MPG.
That works out at about 7.9 pence per mile
Current Mondeo is a diesel, fills with about 62 litres, costs £1.55 a litre and does about 620 miles for that on a long drive which equates to about 45 MPG.
That works out at about 15.5 pence per mile.
Given inflation, that’s probably about right over a period of 26 years.
Interesting to see two cars made by the same manufacturer in the same class compared side to side, given how much bigger the last model (estate)is when compared to the mk1 (hatchback), both in dimensions and weight. The newer one also has ac, more power, torque, gears, FG and is more comfortable, while the lack of velour is also appreciated.
