I'm not impressed.... He braked 100m earlier for that corner than on any previous lap. In F1 terms that's like braking in a different county. He has form on this, he always seemed to go totally banzai with Lewis behind him, even when he's just let half the rest of the field past. I get the love for his enduring ability, but this was not fair or safe racing.... www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/68649182

Even as a non-racer, that does seem a bit blatant to say the least!

Seems an utter dick move and also completely pointless. Glad he was penalised but it was a bit of a lame punishment. Alonso's not daft though and knows what he can just about get away with.

His excuse seems a bit lame that he was managing a throttle issue. It all seemed a little unnecessary as I doubt George would have got past on the last lap.
Its odd there is so much noise that Alonso has been hard done to. I'm all for hard racing but this one does seem a bit of a slam dunk penalty. But the punishment doesn't really fit the crime. A one place drop was it, and to his teammate?

The comments (like on the link above on Youtube) are ridiculous. As they often are on Ukraine, conspiracies, and anything contentious. People's racial, nationalistic, and even car brand affiliations trump any kind of decency or morality.
According to a lot of the comments on this video, Russell can't drive (and is a crybaby for calling for the red flag so loudly), Mercedes never hire racers, brake testing people in F1 is fine, and Alonso can do no wrong.
The data tells a story of a dramatically early brake, that's unsporting and dangerous in my book - braking 100m eaerly on such a fast bit of track is not a defensive line for a corner, its making a braking zone out of nothing. And beached on his side in a near full speed section of track, anyone hitting Russel was likely to kill themselves and him, it was fully justified in my book to make the loud please for a red flag and in anyone's opinion it was a SC or red flag for sure....

I quite agree. At the speed they were taking that corner any messing with braking was always going to be dangerous and I can understand Russell's concern at being speared at 120mph whilst lying on his side. I am sure though that Alonso is far from the first to be guilty of this kind of behaviour - just look at Senna holding up Mansell in Monaco for lap after lap. Back then though they didn't have the telemetry they have today.
