Another trip to the dealers (annual service) another XC90 this time in 'my god that's white' white and R-design flavour which adds black 20inch alloys (they really are that large) and a more aggressive bumper design. Without the T8 engine these things sound terrible. Not just, "oh how disappointing it's a diesel" terrible but, "is it broken?" terrible. The engine is always audible, although wind noise was vying for that spot in this example, and has a cheapness to its sound that would not be unsurprising in an early nineties diesel Fiesta. Other than that it's typical XC90. Interior is nice enough but badly needs a sunroof, the black everything is just too much in a car like this. This example has radar cruise control and some function activated that projected red lights onto the windscreen to suggest you might be tailgating the car in front. It became quite annoying with the things on all the way home. The ride may have been a bit firmer in this sportier model. It corners very flat but the steering is so light your reluctant to press on. Nice enough car the XC90 but this is far from the ideal spec:

Do they feel as vast to drive as they look?

On a Volvo XC90. Oh dear..... Designers have an awful lot to answer for. I'm not sure if the engines were the same, but I thought that the D2 diesel I had in a V40 loaner one time was the worst diesel engine I've ever driven.

Do they feel as vast to drive as they look? Feels smaller than my XC70 even though it's bigger. Much easier to judge where it ends but also more weildly controls. For me (rural dwelling) it's a comfortable size. It feels just right and I like the height you sit. I still have it, actually. My car isn't ready so I can say for sure the stiffer suspension is a disaster. I noticed the rear seats shaking quite a lot as it drove over slightly uneven roads. I've never known a car do that. Overall is just feels a bit too cheap and it isn't. I've not looked up but I guess this is in the region of £50k.

I'm not sure that I would ever buy a car with black, or dark grey, headlining, It ought to be a light colour to try to brighten up the interior

I like dark headlinings. When you have a light coloured one you get that glaring meeting of a black dashboard and the light pillar trim. I prefer it when they're the same colour, even if that means sitting in a coal bunker.

Ugh to the white colour. I sat in a V90 R Design in the dealer a couple of months ago and that was black with a fully black interior. It looked very moody indeed. By contrast, the XC90 in there was grey with a light colour interior and a panoramic roof and was very airy. I'm surprised that it is noisy but I've not yet been able to sample one. The lights along the screen are a tad annoying. I turn the thing off on mine, although you can adjust the distance from the car ahead so it doesn't activate so early. The adaptive cruise is, however, fantastic. Used in stop start queues, you don't need to do anything but steer.

My brother has an XC60 R Design with the four cylinder diesel. It sounds like a taxi. My other brother has an S80 with the 215 D5. That sounds decent and goes well when prodded.

The real problem with this one is the engine is particularly badly insulated but then there are a variety of wind rush noises and the whole cacophony comes together to make a terrible racket that sounds incredibly cheap. It's a shame as I like the car but a lot would need to be improved before I bought one.

I like the XC90 but why would anyone buy one in sporty flavour, leave that to the X5 and Cayenne. Its a Volvo, it should be in luxury spec with a magic carpet ride. Love their interiors if you spec them right.

On the subject of engine noise I was in a friend's Alfa Giulietta diesel last night and it was noticeable when I got back in the 320 how thin and tinkly that sounds. I miss the growl of my 530d.

For a car of that sort to even let you hear a rattly engine is a disgrace. The 5 series with the 2 litre diesel is almost silent and there is no excuse for the XC90 to be any different given the space they have to work with. I hope we aren't seeing a bit of parent company cost cutting having an impact on such basic things as sound proofing.

If I was in the market for an SUV bought with my own pennies - I'd have an Audi Q7.
All the press I have read and watched suggests that Q7 is beautifully built, whisper quiet, very comfortable and powered by a syrupy V6 diesel that turns in the same economy figures as the under powered 4 cylinder elephants (no names, no pack drill). There seem to be some very competitive lease and PCP deals too.

Well at least from the inside you can't see it. The new Q7 is another ugly SUV that looks like it was designed by a committee whose members never met before signing it off.

I imagine the Q7 is a very good car but I profoundly dislike the looks and could never be happy spending my own money on one. My car has gone back into the dealers today so I've currently got a tiny little V40 in R-design spec. Very much struggling to get along with the manual gearbox.

Other than in a vintage car or a weekend toy such as a Morgan, I wouldn't consider a car with a manual box now.

I quite enjoyed rowing around in a manual Fiesta for the last few days. It helped that it was a very sweet gearbox, but even so something like a Fiesta doesn't really suit an automatic.
