Firstly, I presume Jo is OK? (always the first question, and I try never to assume!) Secondly .. .. how old is the Pug to be getting written off? The damage doesn't look all that bad at all, to my untrained eye.

The damage doesn't look all that bad at all, to my untrained eye. She's fine, it was low speed. I think she's more gutted that it was her Mum's car that she inherited after she died 4 years back. Hence why I want to keep it for Phoebe. It's a 2014 Fiesta with 70k on the clock. No mechanical damage that I can see, just cosmetic.

Well, that's a 'Cardle' fail for me then!

Glad that Jo is Ok, and that damage looks very minor to write a car off.
Does it need new panels? Could the wing pull back into shape and most of the scuffs polish out?

Glad Jo's OK other than a bit of dented pride. It does seem shocking that it's been written off but having seen the bills insurance companies get from body shops for some of our fleet cars that's actually probably a 3 grans claim if you were to get it repaired. No wonder insurance premiums are rocketing!

Happy that no-one was hurt. That damage looks very light and a new headlight, some realigning of the wing, a touch up stick and a polish, should sort it.

Glad Jo is OK and I like the new motor.
At a time when we are supposed to be conserving Earth's resources it seems ridiculous to write off the Fiesta for such superficial damage. Definitely a good idea to buy it back and fix it yourself. A niece of mine recently had her Fiesta written off for similarly superficial damage. A complete waste.

I would be going for the buy-back and fitting the new panels - I replaced the wing and bumper on my daughter's X-Type a few years ago (luckily managed to find someone breaking one in the same colour) - took about 6 or 7 hours and a good couple of that was down to a few rusted bumper fixings and the fog lights having different fittings so required some modifications. As I recall the cost was around £100.

Agree with the comments around it being crazy that such a small amount of damage is enough to write it off and keeping it in the family.
I like the Swift, it was a strong contender when looking for my eldests first car.

Daft shout by the insurers on the Fester.
Good shout on the Swift.

Glad to hear Jo is OK.
I'm with the others that think insurers are just taking the lazy way out these days. Swifts are decent little motors.

The Swift looks excellent! I hear very good things about them, including from a close friend who kept one over a recent M4 when he was driving so little he needed only one car (well I mean he also has a camper thing, Caterham, and motorbike - but needed just one "normal use" car ). The write off seems crazy - unless they are liable for a courtesy car for her. In which case they are probably worried about how long the parts and/or work might take, and comparing that to presumably a low value. Definitely buy it back! If she knocks my dad's old fiesta I can imagine my daughter would be similarly upset, for something like that it would not be worth claiming though I suppose if there is a third party involved it can get complicated...

Our neighbours have a red Swift, but it's the later model. They love it.

That Swift looks good. Hope she has many happy miles in it.
The Fiesta looks like the damage is minimal. Hope you get to repair it- they’re a great small car and ideal for a first motor.

Good shout on the Swift - always a very under-rated car.
I think insurance claims on older cars are always prone to the "write it off" decision. My 10 year old Rover P6 V8 was written off for the sake of a new boot-lid and rear bumper. I am sure they hope you'll buy it back to minimise their net cost and make it your problem, not theirs. As I did and you probably will too.
And I think it is even worse now when parts have gone up or are in short supply. Hire car costs are crazy. Body shops have backlogs. They see it as better to write it off and let it be your problem if you want to get it fixed.
