.... we used to look out for new cars as for many years it was the annual plate change day. I remember 1985 with particular pleasure, I even remember what tie I wore that day.....

We moved from Farnham to Ewell on 1st August 1974. My sister and I were checking number plates all the way up.

I remember it well from Mrs.Sacamano's years in the motor trade, the panic leading up to it, the shuttling of cars from one temporary storage yard to another, the late nights trying to sort paperwork, the hurriedly done PDIs and the exhortations every year from her that she would never, ever buy a car for delivery on Aug 1st.

I remember this always used to fall during our summer holidays. I remember my first 1972 L reg was a Vauxhall Viva spotted in Devon and my first 1976 R reg was a yellow Ford Cortina spotted outside the Idle Rocks Hotel in St Mawes.

August 1st reg changes were much more of an event back then than they are today - the first one I remember was 1970 with the J plate - the first one I saw was a metallic green Capri, presumably just driven out of the Ford garage we had in our town back then : VDE 24J
The strange thing is, I always saw a new reg on the 1st when they were issued in August - these days I can go up to a week before seeing a new reg.

I can remember the first Escort mark 2, It was red and being driven down Falcon road in Battersea. Me and my mate Alan Muddle. Sunny and cloud free sky so the tarmac was hot to the touch. I rarely get that bothered with new reg/motors now.

I'm assuming the tie was specially bought for the occasion.

I'm assuming the tie was specially bought for the occasion. Nope.... the tie was a present from my late aunt some time previously. It's a "letter" tie, with "C" scattered all over it (for my first initial), but it also happened to be "C" plate day on 1 Aug 1985

I rarely get that bothered with new reg/motors now. I've had 3 different Mk2 Escorts, the only other car that I've had 3 of is the E46

.... we used to look out for new cars as for many years it was the annual plate change day. One of the best days of my life as a child was running down to a large patch of grass aside the main Dunchurch Road (A426) and with my friends spotting the new-registration cars as they drive past. 1983 when I was 11 was a particular favourite as that was the introduction of the 'A' prefix, my Dad bought a brand new Vauxhall Cavalier that year from Batchelor Bowles Vauxhall Leicester, A387 FJU a 1.6 L 4 door in light blue, can still remember it

Right down towards the south was pretty impressive in the afternoon of August 1st.

Don't remember seeing one any further than Northern France on the 1st though, that's good going. Closest we came was with the Rover SD1, leaving on the 2nd August and driving down to Northern Italy.
