Nice, I like those, and if it makes you want to drive it, then little more needs to be said really - job done. I must admit to the Lupo GTi being a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Also - less guiltily and more expensively - Audi S1's, which I like despite rarely being an Audi person. WTF would someone invest in stupid plates and so on, and accept budget tyres? They're a safety issues aside from trashing the enjoyment of the car. Like the ones on the Golf Plus we bought ages ago, bin them!! It doesn't make any sense to me either, I'd never run a car on anything other than one of the best available tyres. My Mums Up has the same size wheels/tyres as the GTI so I know there isn't a huge amount of choice in that size, but even so you can get something decent for £100 a corner so you're not saving much by going cheap.

The tyres are the OEM Goodyear EcoPerformance and are hard compound, co2 friendly but crap.....they are the original supplied tyres, but big cracks in tread and only 5 years old!
Will be replaced in a few weeks, too much metal/screws around with building work for a new set just yet.
To mess up brands A2 4 BEM is also £250 😁

What tyres does your Mum's have ? Is she a spirited driver? My Dad just replaced LFL with the Goodyears. What are you looking at? I thought the Hankook looked like a decent option, but my Dad had a different (dated!) view on the brand. No, she's not a spirited driver and my Dad has slowed down a lot over the last few years. They use it for local journeys only as my Dad doesn't like it on the motorway (having more than 75hp might help), but he's got the BMW for longer journeys and towing.

I'm looking at the continental SC3 or Hankook, trying to keep to standard tyres 195 40 17, lots of people increase to 205 40 17 as there is more choice but concerned about insurance

I was trying to work out why GT15 and GT18 are £300 more than GT10. There is seeminly no logic to the DVLA pricing strategy. Plates with the year number starting with 1, eg 11, 21 tend to be more expensive that those starting with 5,6 or 7, eg 51, 61

A brief update on the Up, I had new tyres fitted this week as the original tyres were Eco rubbish, struggling for traction, grip and the ride in the aim of saving a few carbons.
The 195 40 17 tyre size has very limited choice, so I went up a size to 205 section in order to get Michelin Pilot Sport 5 fitted. Formula One auto centre fitted all 4 in 30mins and beat the sale prices for £116 each.
The result to the traction was significant, putting down the power without issue even in the crap slippery conditions. The impact to the ride was better but wasn't as great as I hoped (still quite crashy)
I checked the tyre pressure today and they had set them to 3.95 bar/55psi....I reset them to recommended 2.4/2.2 bar and the impact on the ride is significantly better. More supple and less harsh whilst still firm.
I may head into the peaks tomorrow just to bed them in 😁 but they have made such a positive impact it is a shame they weren't fitted as standard. They fill the arches well. Ironically the Lupo GTi had the same size as I have upgraded to.
I'm really enjoying the little Up, and made contact with the previous owners, both were enthusiasts, the first of which has sent me a folder of stuff, including the original order documents, some features he had enabled by VW like auto door locking, rear lights on with DRLs and a spreadsheet of every tank of Shell V Power he put in the car...
I'm very happy with it 😁

^ How did you find the previous owner's details? Were they in the receipts with the car? In the old days you used to get the name and address of at least the most recent owner on the V5 but that has stopped due to "data protection" :-( The last time I wrote to the DVLA requesting info on previous owners I never heard anything back but I thought they were supposed to provide it

I got the preceding owner's address from a copy of the V5 the dealer left with me and the original owners address was on all the Volkswagen service invoices
Preceding owner seems to have used every fixing strip to put on the 4D number plates, I can't budge them...hair dryer/fishing wire and acetone beckons tomorrow so I can put the plain boring ones on

What makes the number plates 4D as opposed to just 3D? Am I missing something? Do they light up or move about?

I'm still not getting which part is the fourth dimension but maybe that's why I'm not in the market for a set of my own!

Thank you, I now know the difference, however it doesn't make them any less horrible, especially the union flag made up of little bits of plastic. They are resisting all attempts to remove them so far!

Nearly as bad as tinted number plates which scream "I am a cocksocket" to the rest of the world.

Nearly as bad as tinted number plates which scream "I am a cocksocket" to the rest of the world. Any non stadard numberplate does in my book.... Especially when there are obvious things on the car that needed the money!!

Car could do with a good clean, but a little job done and the horrible plates are gone. The previous hap used a whole pack of strips per plate!
