Anyone tried one of these (or similar) before? www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B084M5ZL5L?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1With the less regular use of my cars, I have non stop battery issues - past about 5 years old they seem to work fine in regular use, with less use things like start stop rarely work. Running a cable out to plug in an optimiser is not easy here, and not popular with the boss, involving cables across the hallway as it does, and connecting to the battery directly is a pain. This looks like a good option, especially for the Boxster, where the (quite big) solar panel sits behind the folding seats easily in a dead space. cigar lighter sockets often go off with the ignition (or soon after) so I'm using OBD, which I had not realised you can charge through, but its part of the standards for it. In both my cars the OBD port is easily accessible and has no cover. Too early here to say whether mine is working, we only really get full light on the side of the cars in the winter, half the day, not ideal. In the summer the sun comes over the house and half the time it will be ideal - it should keep the Boxster happy at least...

Yes. It was useless. Wouldn't keep the MX-5 charged so I ended up running a waterproof extension lead out to the car and putting the CTEK under the bonnet.
Ours was the AA one.
It is now in the garage so it can stay on the charger over the winter.

There is a much simpler and more enjoyable solution to the problem ALF.....use them more regularly!

True, but it doesn't take long on modern cars for them to noticeably drain an older battery in winter - the Giulia has the threshold for the start/stop set to something like 75% of a new battery (explaining why I've never had it happen, no loss) but the rear demister stops not long after that, and it has plenty going on when parked to drain it. Having my work dashcam and two trackers pulling charge for a few hours after each trip doesn't help I expect... The Jag was the same until I spent all that money on the new discs and pads all round, and replaced both batteries, which the Alfa now needs ironically! At least the tyres were new.
I might make more use of my old Optimate III then, the current versions look different but I read are much the same . The well-reviewed charger I bought off Amazon (since the Optimate III is a maintainer and takes ages to charge) is useless- it says the Alfa is charged fairly fast, then seems not to trickle charge, which is what I expected a "smart" charger to do next.
Driving them is all very well but it's quite urban/congested in most directions outside of work time, all the good lanes I usually take the Boxster on (in the one easy rural direction) are flooded mud pits, and I always find winter a bit hazardous (ice, rocks, tree branches, mud, standing water, etc) and not enjoyable for pointless drives. Currently I am going out in the daytime as I got Pneumonia on Friday after a cold all last week (and the genius idea of running Thursday night...). I was so spaced out all weekend I could not have driven, but Tina took the QF to Reading and back to go sofa shopping, reporting it extremely easy to drive, nice to be in, and lacking the aggravating drivers window motorway wind noise the second XFR had, so all good. I took the Porsche out today as I'm only working the calls I feel are actually worth it, but unamazingly 24hours after taking the impressive array of inhalers, steroid pills and antibiotics the doc gave me yesterday morning, I'm not cured and took it very easy!!!
I guess when I'm well, time I could be driving, I'm often cycling or running, before dinner/TV/bed routine. IF I was doing a lot more miles, I wouldn't have bought the QF mind - I want the bigger miles trips in it to be trips to Wales, Scotland, Yorkshire, across Europe etc - not busy SE roads...
