My car was in for a brake fluid service this morning and I got the usual video. What I was not expecting was the "technician" to say that my bonnet struts, which push the bonnet up in the event of a pedestrian throwing themselves at me, have a lifespan of approximately 4 years and should be replaced: they have a date on them. £198 for the parts! What next? Are we going to be told that we need new seatbelts because the auto-tensioner only lasts 3 years or will the air bags all need changed?. Has anyone else been told something similar at a service? I told them not to change them and I will think about it but it is worrying that all this new tech fitted to cars is being given a limited lifespan.

Extract from service schedule:
Part of the brake fluid service is to check strut dates, taken from inspection sheet on ista
Brake fluid service (000061:cool2: if fitted: Active pedestrian protection(SA8TF): Check expiry date for gas pressure spring for bonnet, replace if necessary(1) Expiry must last to next brake fluid service No imprint of expiry date: Replace every 5 years based on vehicle production date(1) Expiry must last to next service Changing brake fluid With SA606, SA609, SA663 enter scope of maintenance in electronic service history Resetting service display in acc. with factory specifications
Looks like it's a proper bit of bollocks as airbags don't even have an expiry date and they have an explosive device inside them.

I remember when airbags were first fitted, it was said that they should be changed after 10 years which would probably cost more than those cars were worth at 10 years of age. I view it all as a money-making scam by manufacturers/legislators

Wasn't the deployment of 'pyrotechnic pedestrian safety measures' something that led to the writing off of Nissan GT-Rs in the early days of all this?
Its irritating that car users are faced with costs like this while pedestrians are walking round with their giant headphones to drown out all noises and eyes glued to their mobile phones with absolutely zero awareness of their surroundings. I'm sure we've all witnessed numerous occasions when these zombies just step onto the road without checking.

Maybe it's the latest BMW tax idea? I was told exactly the same thing at the MINi's 5 year old MOT in August. I think the quote was about £500 inc labour. I politely declined the offer.

I think this is generic everywhere. My new pc will not start so I report it and they (Chillblast) refer me to their ontite repair agents (Mendit). They tell me I have to agree to a £250 software reinstall charge or they will not procede. What is the first repair go to? Software reinstall so my free warranty becomes £250 every time something goes pear shaped.
If they have a father, they do not know his name.

Barmy. It’s a bit like this new obsession that a car must now have automatic emergency braking. Sorry but I don’t consider that a feature I care whether a car has and smacks of this awful obsession today that everyone and everything must be wrapped in cotton wool at all time and coddled to the point of being addled.

Is this not just a progression of society? Sad but natural progression. Some years ago there was asimulator and some of the dev team had major accidents driving on the road. They had the feeling that the "car will save me if I cannot" and the "I didn't do that" culture.
It seems folk are more than happy in more situations, to have the systems do the work and be passengers effectively. I can only say to them, "Get the bloody bus and leave driving to those who want to do it properly".
Yeah, right. Obviously going to happen soon.
