As you may remember, a few years ago I bought a series of cars to use for work in an effort to "save" the Legacy from the worst of my usual round-the doors work driving.
While rummaging in my file for something else just now, I came across my old mileage sheets for the Fiesta, Alfa GT and Golf GTi. I must say, my memory re mileages for these is really way off; must be the drugs!
Fiesta - 4953. To be fair, I didn't really have this for very long, and it didn't do any longer journey than in to work and back.
Alfa GT - 8504. I honestly thought I'd done by far & away the most miles in this one. Seems not.
Golf GTi - 12911. This number surprised me the most, as I didn't think I'd done anything like that amount, even in the 2 years I owned it!
So, there we have it. As of this morning, if I hadn't had those cars the Legacy would now be sitting at 136,583 instead of the 11025 it currently has showing. In hindsight, not sure having those cars makes any kind of financial sense, but it was fun - mostly!

I was looking at old MOTs for my cars a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at the variability of the annual mileages. The first year we had the M5 it covered 20k miles! The Coupe had a couple of highish mileage years (10-15k) but the second Stilo racked up quite a few in the 3 years we had it. Similarly the 530d did 25k in the 2 years we had that but it was shared with the first 320 that did 35k in 3 years while giving the Fiat & M5 a rest.

I did wonder about a 3rd car as a commuter to keep the miles off the V60 and to reduce the effect of its enthusiasm for gulping super unleaded but I'd just be paying more VEL, more insurance and the rest.

My mileage is pretty constant at around 8k per annum, including one annual trip to Italy in the car.
The M135i racked up 30k miles over 4 years, so averaging 7.5k per annum, and the GC is currently sitting at 5.5k after 7 months, but that already includes this year's Italian trip, so I doubt it will go beyond 8k before the first year is up in December.
Likewise my wife's mileage is pretty constant at around 4.5k per year. Her 500 is currently on 15k miles and will be 4 yrs old in November.
Second car-wise, I did about 18k miles in the first Z1 over 5 years, so around 3.5k per annum, and then only did just over 5k in a little under 4 years in the second Z1, so you can see the usage tailed off quite a bit. That was mainly due to the addition of my wife to the mix - before I used to take the Z1 on longer trips like w/ends away because fitting my luggage in was not an issue. Once she came on the scene, that ended pretty swiftly as there was no way to fit in the amount she takes for even one night away, plus she strongly preferred to use the "normal" car for anything more than just day trips and for any day on which the weather was anything other than perfect.

That was the position we were in in 2010 - Mrs Tim came home one day and proudly announced that she'd managed to get 30mpg out of the M5 by cruising up the motorway at 60.
My fastidious calculations, excluding man-maths, worked out that at 12k miles p.a. buying the Stilo for £2k would be repaid within 10 months based on improved fuel economy and less servicing (DIY oil change rather than a proper garage service) and tyres (half the price for the Stilo compared with the M5).
I'd then have the residual value of the Stilo plus, in theory, less depreciation on the M5 as well.

As you can see, living in central London, we don't have any issue "keeping the miles off" - they accumulate pretty slowly! In fact that's the strongest argument my wife has against having a 3rd "fun" car - she rightly points out that two cars is already a luxury and we'd inevitably end up with one car that never got used enough to justify the running costs. Also, I think that if we lived in the countryside with ample space for garaging, I'd get away with having a couple of extra cars tucked away in a corner, but with space at a premium in London, it just rapidly gets a bit complicated.

Mileage is not really an issue although it has gone up in recent years. 9k miles since 1988 is not exactly excessive.

Second car stats are something I look forward to generating in the coming months after the Volvo departs in September.

Is there a digit missing from your last figure? - otherwise it seems that doing 26,368 miles in the second cars has saved 125,558 miles in the Legacy?

Turned over 111000 just yesterday!

W2.0's MoT certificates indicate that 1,000 miles per annum is the norm in the E46. Given the cost of tax, service, paint repairs (!) and insurance it's probably about £1 per mile including petrol.
It's a toss-up between the R1 and the Gorilla which is the most used vehicle in our home as the bike gets used 5 days a week for about 44 weeks a year (yes, I do take that much time off) and that's a 30mile round trip so 6,600 miles The Gorilla has done 6,195 miles since leaving Dachau in May last year and racks this up with trips to ballet, weekends out, the lakes etc. It would be 2k up if W2.0 allowed me to drive it across Europe but she can't stand driving for that long whereas I love it. Might as well buy a 2 seat Ferrari and a Golf R then.....

Every Christmas when we drive to Italy, my wife declares afterwards that we're never doing it again (despite insisting on a car suitable for trips to Italy and returning laden with local produce). Then, by the time the next year comes around, the passage of time has eased her objections and she's ready to do it again.
That said, last year she contrived to fly down to Lugano about (2/3rds of the distance) a few days before me and I drove down on my own, collecting her in Lugano en route, and we only drove back together.
