I followed an X4 M Competition in traffic yesterday. My first question was: what competition series runs these behemoths? Certainly not one in traffic in Epsom, I reckon.
Is there a brand more crap than “M” when comparing its use in the current market against that of its origins? I’m saying that as an M Sport owner, remember. That it’s the only way to get certain options is infuriating enough but a high-sided 4wd bus with “Competition” on the rear badge is laughable.

I know what you mean. Mine is badged as an M-Sport car too, but nothing really terribly sporty about a big, heavy 2-litre diesel, however well it's packaged.

Er, AMG.

I was in the 997 the other day and I couldn't shift an X3M off my arse on a corner leading onto a motorway slip road and once in a straight line I got toasted by his carbons. It was rather humiliating. If it was an X4 at least I could have laughed at how ugly it was.
But yes your right, take the new XM, great Citroen rubbish M car. All the SUV's are rather impressive but the natural home of the knuckle dragger.
I'd still love an M5, or the new M2 (In Black to hide the shape) but that's your lot. Maybe an M3 Touring but an Alpina B3S would be a much nicer place to be.

From a financial perspective - the brand is in rude health. I wonder if seeing how many billions of Euros you can stuff down each other's lederhosen ever gets boring.

The new M2 is the only one I would consider buying new at the current time.
PeaK BMW M was probably early 2000s with the E39 M5 and E46 M3. Since then, the cars have got more luxurious, objectively better in many areas but probably subjectively worse in those that count with the enthusiast driver.
I say this as an E90 M3 owner and E46 M3 former owner. In my opinion the E90 is the better all-rounder by some margin, but the E46 was naughtier and more fun to drive.
The current M3 is very impressive but it's pretty big, pretty heavy and not available with a manual gearbox option.

This is the same argument used when Arsenal targeted consistent top 4 whilst funding the new stadium and again this season, despite the end of season collapse.

Had to commute a different route this morning, due to the plethora of roadworks near our office. Saw an E90 M3 (in silver) and thought what a purposeful-looking car it is. No messing about, does what it says on the tin. Sadly, not suitable for toys or dogs!

I don't do football so I need a whoosh parrot. If you mean that there is a potential fiscal lag by continued devaluation and uglification of the offerings - you may have a point....but: - M division still seem to knock out class leading machines in each of their core categories (the CS models in particular are like 4 wheeled second comings of Christ). - Many of the models have been swamp donkeys for a while now and the money keeps rolling in.

You missed one, it has a bmw badge on it so people are brainwashed into whatever they are selling.
Only way I can rationalise it.
Not saying AMG etc are any better.

Sadly its not just car enthusiasts that make good money - indeed its mostly not car enthusiasts by a long way. If you feel the need to rub other people's faces in how amazing you are at work, I guess a car that is both massive and fast, and dripping with fau-motorsport related "heritage" that basically shows it cost more than the others in the range, is the way to go.
Some manage it better than others - I've always quite liked some of the AMG V8 SUV's - BMW seem determined to batter everything with the ugly stick as hard as possible. The new M240i is nice, especially in that weird purple colour, and from the Evo long term test (where they prefer it to the full M cars to drive) probably the one to have. Anything much more M than that is pretty minging, and personally whenever I see current M3/M4 in traffic they are always being utter bellends, revving the engine, leaving little gaps then accelerating at full pelt, deciding they need to do a 3-point turn then blast back the other way, etc. And its an international disease as that's both here and in Germany.....
I saw an F Pace SVR in Berlin at the weekend - that's doing it properly, as Evo Harry has pointed out... So sublte, you would barely know how potent it is, yet pretty as well. And rides well. Shame they retain value well, because people that know, know. Just not enough nouvea riche bellends buy them new.

The former is like the latter after a particularly unwise trip to a cut-price plastic surgeon in Istanbul. Great car, ruined looks.

^^^ Fair play. I've yet to see an M2 in the metal, but I do like the looks of the M240i in the metallic purple colour.

Oh come on, the entire Turkish plastic surgery industry is fully employed rebuilding Katie Price, they don’t have the bandwidth to tackle additional work from BMW.
