Not to be outdone by the “Porsche used car prices” thread…. Yoinks! Thats a lot for a souped-up rep mobile.

Bonkers.
There were (IMO) so many other far better cars than that - some of which were sold (or still for offer) for massively less.
The little Elan I loved the look of sold for £25,875 (plus buyers premium) and regardless of how ‘special’ the Cossy might be in the collectors world I would have had a large garage full of other interesting cars from the auction for that money!!
Scrolling through it seems a lot or the cars sold close to lower estimates which might be a signal of the market pressures in general!
There were 2 Sapphire RS Cosworths in the sale as well. One went for £109k and the other can be bought for £35k now!

Or what about this for a more reasonable way to get into a ‘rally special’:
2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Litchfield Type 25 - One of 38
The final car of the 38 Litchfield cars and famously dubbed “The best Impreza on Planet Earth” by Chris Harris in Autocar magazine.
Buy it now for £29,900

That's just utterly bonkers.

I was reading about this on another forum earlier.
Sounds like a complete one-off result for a variety of reasons. At 5k miles and 35 years old it isn't a car, it's probably an investment proposition for someone who has incredibly deep pockets and several related models.

I’m amazed by the price, especially as that means there was more than one person wanting it at that level!

One of the final bidders was apparently based in Dubai.
I've read speculation that the successful bidder was Chris Evans who possibly also recently bought the Princess Di Escort Turbo.

Makes far more sense then the ex Princess Di RS Turbo that went through Silverstone Auctions last year.
I kind of understand, its the ultimate Fast Ford from the our generation so someone in the 40's/50's who has made a load of bunce isn't going to bulk at 500K. Its the same price as a 2.7 RS.

I don't understand the attraction of these cars at all. Given the price paid, I assume it will never be driven and just be on display in a collection - which is fine, but you could do a ground up restoration for a 3rd of the price paid if you just want something pretty and perfect to show your mates.
If it does get driven, I suspect it will be the greatest anti-climax ever - " hmm, it just drives like a moderately quick old Sierra...wow...look at these plastics......ooh, steering column shake....etc.. "
