A friend of mine has recently traded his Audi S3 in for this Mini Cooper Works GP. I had a very brief go of it before heading out in the lifestyle estate. Never have I driven a car that can be so accurately summed up by the word Mental. The exhaust, a long way from stock, fizzes and cracks throughout the rev range offering a soundtrack as manic as the drive. Control are all typically Mini, short movements with instant reactions and good feedback. It's a cliche bar non to say a Mini handles like a go-cart but this one does. The ride is a bit bouncy but not crashingly so and the body stays nothing but flat no matter what you throw at it. And it is quick, tremendously so but bizarrely disguises the sense of speed really well, maybe you just get overwhelmed by the fun. Put your foot down and the car will start to steer with the torque regardless of how fast you're going. I've no idea what kind of tricky the diff has installed but it struggles to keep you in a straight line. Inside it's proper premium Mini, the dash is topped in leather, there are special touches all over the place to let you know what you're driving and of course the back seats are missing replaced with a roll cage. Brilliant fun and a really desirable little car.

I've never had a go in a MINI. Would love to at some point, especially a version such as this.

I've never had a go in a MINI. Would love to at some point, especially a version such as this. +1 I also admire the roof ornaments on the XC70; where I used to work, there seemed to be an unofficial contest to see who could turn up with the most bizarre object strapped onto their roof. Unfortunately I failed to find anyone with a large inflatable elephant.......

I always thought that the Cooper GP Works was a tweak too far. Sounds great as a fun car. But with no back seats and an inability to go in straight lines due to the torque steer, not terribly useable on a daily basis. Unless you're a nutter. Must be great fun on a wet roundabout!
Bravo to him for going for it.

It isn't a daily driver and I think the plan is to use it for track days and so on. It did have an impressive feel good factor but I think I'd find the torque steer tiring pretty quick. Lovely thing though.

RBW 640P. Black, Porsche two pack paint. Loved that car, it was so pointy. Nothing I have driven before or since has been so much FUN. Would I have another? No as I like to think that should I hit a damp paper bag above walking speed, I would get out with no more than a few scratches. Just not the right vehicle to play conkers with a modern car in.

If I were to ever get a MINI and that's not very likely, it would be a GP. At least you can fit more than 2 bags of groceries in the boot! That's a second edition which didn't come with a LSD, so maybe it has been upgraded?
